Alpine skiing: Slovenian rounds off amazing season in style

Slovenian Tina Maze brought her remarkable season to a suitable end here on Sunday winning the final race of the World Cup campaign the giant slalom. The 29-year-old overall World Cup champion - who was recording a record 24th podium finish of the season - timed 2min 16.67sec over the two legs to finish ahead of Tessa Worley of France (2:17.02) and Swiss skier Lara Gut (2:18.05).

Germany's Felix Neureuther won the final World Cup slalom of the season here on Sunday as he pipped Crystal Globe winner Marcel Hirscher into second. Austrian world champion Hirscher was already guaranteed of winning both the slalom and overall World Cup titles. Croatia's Ivica Kostelic finished third. A month after winning silver at the World Championships, Neureuther won the fifth World Cup race of his career and his second this season. And he has set his sights on dethroning Hirscher next year.

LONDON, Canada, March 16 (Yonhap) -- Kim Yu-na is back atop the figure skating world. The South Korean star captured the ladies' competition at the 2013 World Figure Skating Championships here in Canada on Saturday with 218.31 points in total. She scored 148.34 points to lead Saturday's free skating, adding to her 69.97 points that also topped the field in the short program on Thursday. This is Kim's second world title, following her 2009 victory in Los Angeles. She was skating at the worlds for the first time since 2011, when she finished second.

Alpine skiing-Shiffrin seals perfect season with slalom trophy

By Manuele Lang LENZERHEIDE, Switzerland (Reuters) - Mikaela Shiffrin proclaimed her position as the world's number one slalom specialist when she won the season's final race in the discipline on Saturday to add a World Cup title to her world championship gold. The 18-year-old American piped Tina Maze to the slalom crystal globe with a blistering performance on the final section of the second run.

American teenager Mikaela Shiffrin won the last World Cup slalom race of the season here on Saturday to also snatch the discipline's Crystal Globe from Slovenia's Tina Maze. With her fourth World Cup win of the season, the 18-year-old Shiffrin thus added the globe to her world championship success in Schladming last month. Maze could only finish third in this race, just 35 hundreths of a second behind Shiffrin, and thus saw her globe dreams evaporate.
