Protesters rally for south Yemen independence

Thousands gathered in Yemen's main southern city of Aden on Tuesday to call for renewed independence for the south 23 years after it united with the north. Waving the flag of the former People's Democratic Republic of Yemen and portraits of exiled southern leader Ali Salem al-Baid, the protesters gathered at a square in the Khor Maksar district of Aden, an AFP correspondent reported. "We have vowed that Sanaa will no longer rule us. Get out," they chanted. "Independence is our goal," read their banners.

Saudi ship owner paid pirates $2.6 mn ransom

The Saudi owner of an Algerian cargo ship whose crew were held by Somali pirates for 10 months admitted paying $2.6 million to free them in November 2011, an Algerian paper reported Tuesday. The MV Blida, carrying 17 Algerians, six Ukrainians, two Filipinos, one Jordanian and one Indonesian, was captured by a gang of heavily armed pirates on January 1, 2011, on its way from Oman to Tanzania. Two of hostages were released for health reasons in October that year, with the rest freed the following month when a bag full of cash was parachuted from a plane.

Pirates free Danish ship crew held two years in Somalia

Pirates have freed six sailors who were abducted from a Danish cargo ship off Oman and held for more than two years in Somalia, after receiving a ransom, the crew's employer said Tuesday. Shipping company Shipcraft said it had paid the hijackers "considerable millions, substantially more than previous kidnappings where Danish citizens have been involved". It declined to reveal the amount "considering possible future kidnapping situations".

Egypt releases weapons ship after investigation - sources

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian authorities released a ship loaded with heavy weapons and its crew three days after they were seized for entering Egyptian territorial waters in the Red Sea, two security sources told Reuters on Sunday. The Togolese-flagged ship named COMR, with a crew of 14, was escorted into the port of Safaga, 569 km (356 miles) south of Cairo, on Wednesday after straying into Egyptian waters off the Sinai Peninsula. Authorities found weapons and ammunition, and detained the crew members for investigation.

One shot dead as south Yemen protests

A passer-by was killed and three others were wounded when police opened fire to disperse protesters in the southern Yemeni city of Aden on Saturday, witnesses and medical sources said. The witnesses said police intervened to clear the roads in the flashpoint Crater district of the port city where dozens of southern activists had set up roadblocks as part of a "civil disobedience" campaign. Medical sources confirmed the casualty toll, naming the dead man as Hisham al-Nunu from the city of Taez north of Aden.

Prison guard killed as south Yemen protests

A prison guard was killed and a colleague wounded in a gun attack in the port city of Aden, police said on Saturday, as southern Yemen observed a "civil disobedience" campaign called by separatists. The overnight attack came as several district of the main southern city, including Mansura, Sheikh Othman and Crater, were brought to a virtual standstill by the protest action. Police said the shooting took place when a police vehicle from Mansura prison arrived at the local hospital carrying a sick inmate. The assailants fled the scene.

Police shot dead a protester in the historic southeastern Yemeni city of Tarim during a demonstration Monday against a national dialogue that opened in the capital, an activist said. The protester was killed "by police gunfire during clashes with demonstrators protesting against the dialogue," Southern Movement activist Fuad Rashid told AFP. Another activist was wounded while police arrested four others in the town located in the southeastern Hadramawt province, said Rashid.
