Haiti court to re-examine charges against 'Baby Doc'

Two years after his surprise return to Haiti after a quarter century in exile, former dictator Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier is to hear what charges his homeland could bring against him. The once-feared 61-year-old -- who ruled Haiti for almost 15 years between 1971 and 1986 -- astonished Haiti in January 2011 when he flew back from Paris after 25 years away and moved into a plush Port-au-Prince neighborhood.

By Susana Ferreira PORT-AU-PRINCE, Feb 7 (Reuters) - An appeals court judge ordered former Haitian President Jean-Claude 'Baby Doc' Duvalier to appear in court later this month on human rights allegations following a raucous hearing on the issue on Thursday. Duvalier, 61, the country's former "president for life," returned to Haiti in January 2011 after 25 years of exile and was briefly detained on charges of corruption, theft and misappropriation of funds.

New court date set for Haitian ex-dictator Duvalier

A Haitian judge postponed a hearing for former dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier, wanted for corruption, misappropriation and embezzlement, after he failed to show up in court on Thursday. The appeals court judge rescheduled the hearing for February 21, accepting a request from Duvalier's attorneys because the original date coincided with the 27th anniversary of his ouster, and they worried about violence in the streets. Duvalier's lawyers and victims of his regime sparred in court.
