RugbyU: O'Connor ready for Lions targeting in Test

James O'Connor said Thursday he is expecting the British and Irish Lions to target him in only his second game as Wallaby flyhalf in the opening Test of the series this weekend. The self-confident 22-year-old is lining up for his 38th international cap on Saturday but his only appearance at number 10 was his last Test appearance in a 24-18 win over Warren Gatland's Wales in 2011. O'Connor missed all of last year's international season with injuries, firstly with a lacerated liver and then by a hamstring complaint.

RugbyL: Star winger Ferguson charged with indecent assault

Australian rugby league winger Blake Ferguson was Monday charged by police with indecent assault after an incident in a bar, and then suspended by the National Rugby League. The 23-year-old Canberra player was charged following an alleged incident involving a woman in an establishment in Sydney on Sunday and will appear in court on July 16, police said. The NRL said it has suspended Ferguson's registration for repeated behavioural issues involving the abuse of alcohol, and he is now out of this month's second State of Origin match against Queensland.

RugbyU: Timani out, Higginbotham in doubt for Wallabies

The Wallabies have lost lock Sitaleki Timani and have backrower Scott Higginbotham in doubt for this month's Test series against the British and Irish Lions, the Australian Rugby Union said on Monday. Timani, the NSW Waratahs second rower, broke his right thumb during last weekend's 23-22 Super Rugby loss to the Canterbury Crusaders and will require surgery. Higginbotham had scans on Monday after sustaining a dislocated right shoulder in the Melbourne Rebels' 33-20 loss to the Queensland Reds in Brisbane.

RugbyU: Villain Cooper turns hero in Reds win

Flyhalf Quade Cooper, vying for a spot in the Wallaby side to face the Lions, had a mixed night Saturday, but eventually scored the clinching try as the Queensland Reds won a 33-20 bonus-point victory over the Melbourne Rebels in Brisbane. For an hour Cooper could do little right in his head-to-head battle with James O'Connor for the flyhalf place, conceding two tries when his clearing kicks were charged down and missing two easy shots at goal. But the Reds came from 20-18 down, scoring two tries in the final 11 minutes.

RugbyU: Lions ponder 'mind games' in Cooper omission

British and Irish Lions defence coach Andy Farrell said he was puzzled at Quade Cooper's omission from Australia's squad and wondered if the Wallabies were playing "mind games' with their star flyhalf. Farrell said Australia may be trying to motivate Cooper to fight for his place after he was left off the initial list of 25 players for the three-Test series against the Lions. "Who knows what's going on?" Farrell told reporters in Hong Kong, ahead of Saturday's tour opener against the Barbarians.

RugbyU: Rebels claim Waratahs scalp

The Melbourne Rebels put a big dent in the New South Wales Waratahs' Super 15 playoff hopes with a resilient 24-22 home victory on Friday. The Rebels came from 16-13 down to beat the better-resourced Waratahs for the first time in their six encounters and claim their second big scalp in as many weeks after upsetting South Africa's Western Stormers 30-21. Winger Tom English was the two-try hero with his second effort clinching victory for the Rebels five minutes from fulltime.

RugbyL: Raiders end Storm 15-game winning run in NRL

Melbourne Storm's unbeaten 15-match run was ended by the Canberra Raiders in Australia's National Rugby League on Saturday. The Raiders upset the defending NRL champions 24-20 in Melbourne for Storm's first defeat since going down 26-18 to St George Illawarra Dragons in Wollongong last July. Canberra survived late Storm pressure to hang on for only their fourth win in eight games this season. The victory continued the Raiders' superb recent record at Storm's AAMI Park with their third consecutive win.

RugbyU: Brumbies crush Force to stay top of Super 15

The ACT Brumbies scored six tries to crush the Western Force 41-7 in a lopsided Australian derby to extend their lead at the top of the Super 15 standings in Canberra on Saturday. Fijian winger Henry Speight scored a double to become the tournament's leading tryscorer as the Brumbies had little trouble in tossing aside the inept Force. Jake White's Brumbies bounced back from the previous week's dogged 19-19 draw with the Queensland Reds to play some scintillating rugby and wrapped up a four-try bonus point by halftime.

RugbyU: Rebels sign Brumbies flanker Faingaa

The Melbourne Rebels said Sunday they had signed flanker Colby Fainga'a from Australian rivals the ACT Brumbies for the 2014 Super 15 season. The former Australian under-20s captain, the younger brother of Wallabies and Queensland Reds twins Saia and Anthony, will join the Rebels on a one-year contract. Rebels head coach Damien Hill said Faingaa, 22, was a great signing for his club because of his versatility and his desire to improve himself.
