RugbyL: 30 players to be interviewed by anti-doping unit

Anti-doping authorities Wednesday said they wanted to interview 30 players from the Australian National Rugby League (NRL) as part of a wide-ranging probe into alleged drug use in sport. The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) advised the NRL that it had completed the initial phase of its investigation and wanted to speak with "players who may be able to assist with further information".

Australia scrumhalf Phipps to leave Rebels for Waratahs

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Australia scrumhalf Nick Phipps is to leave the Melbourne Rebels Super Rugby franchise and return to Sydney to join the New South Wales Waratahs on a two-year contract next season, both sides said on Saturday. The 24-year-old Phipps is originally from Sydney but moved south to the Rebels when they began playing in the Super Rugby competition in 2011. "Nick has played a major part in laying the foundations of this club and it is disappointing to see him leave," Rebels coach Damien Hill said in a statement.

Wallabies scrumhalf Nick Phipps will leave the Melbourne Rebels to join the New South Wales Waratahs for the next two Super 15 seasons, the Waratahs said on Saturday. Phipps, 24, made his Test debut against Samoa in 2011 and has gone on to earn 12 caps, including starting in eight out of the Wallabies' last nine matches. "Nick is a good threatening, attacking player," Waratahs coach Michael Cheika said. "He's a quality player and I think that he's still got a lot of potential to fulfil. That makes for very good competition in the number nine position."

RugbyU: Reds drop Wallaby winger Ioane over pub incident

Queensland Rugby Union Monday dropped Wallaby winger Digby Ioane from this weekend's Super 15 match against Western Force following an incident at a pub in Melbourne. Police in Victoria state said they were investigating an alleged assault of a 30-year-old man who sustained a minor leg injury on Saturday night, with Ioane interviewed. The QRU had a meeting with the player Monday and both parties agreed that Ioane had failed to demonstrate the necessary behaviour expected of a senior player within the Reds squad, officials said in a team statement.

Queensland Reds came from behind to beat the Melbourne Rebels 23-13 in their Super 15 Australian derby and keep in touch of conference leaders ACT Brumbies on Friday. The 2011 Super Rugby Champions scored two tries to one with Wallaby flyhalf Quade Cooper proving the difference with two conversions and three penalties. The Reds have yet to lose to the Rebels in five encounters but trailed 13-10 at halftime when centre Lachlan Mitchell scored off a delayed James O'Connor pass right on the halftime siren.
