Pakistani army launches offensive near Afghan border

By Maria Golovnina ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Residents of Pakistan's ethnic Pashtun region of North Waziristan accused government troops on Monday of killing dozens of civilians during a military operation against Taliban insurgents. The operation started just after a December 18 suicide bomb attack on a checkpoint in North Waziristan, a stronghold for al Qaeda-linked Taliban militants on Pakistan's mountainous border with Afghanistan.

Security forces kill 23 militants in Pakistan's North Waziristan

Security forces late Wednesday killed at least 23 militants who had attacked a military convoy in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal region, the Defense Ministry said Thursday. The ministry's press department said the convoy had gone to rescue injured security men from the Khajori check post in North Waziristan, which had been attacked by a suicide bomber earlier Wednesday. Five security men were killed and several injured when the suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden truck into a mosque at the check post.

Clash leaves six dead in southwest Pakistan

At least six people were killed in southwest Pakistan when security forces exchanged fire with suspected militants during an operation to recover abductees, officials said on Friday. The exchange of fire took place in the restive Baluchistan province, which is rife with ethnic insurgency and sectarian violence. "Our forces were conducting an operation on Thursday to recover some kidnapped people from the Baluch militants, they faced resistance and five militants were killed in retaliatory firing," Asad Gilani, home secretary of Baluchistan province, told AFP.

First US drone strike in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa kills five

The first US drone strike in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province killed five people Thursday, two of them belonging to Afghanistan's Haqqani network, officials said. The attack targeting a religious seminary belonging to the Haqqani network took place in Tal, a town in the northwestern Hangu district bordering the North Waziristan, Orakzai and Kurram tribal regions. Afghan loses British citizenship over terror training claims

An Afghan stripped of his British citizenship for allegedly travelling to Pakistan and Afghanistan for terrorism training lost his appeal against the decision on Wednesday. The 41-year-old, identified only as Y1, claimed asylum in Britain in 1998 and became a British national in 2004. But he allegedly travelled to Miranshah, the main town in Pakistan's northwestern tribal area of North Waziristan, for terror training in 2010, and was then captured by British forces in the western Afghan city of Herat in July 2011.

Financier of Taliban-linked group shot dead in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - The chief financier of the Taliban-linked Haqqani network militant group has been shot dead in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad, militant sources told Reuters on Monday. "Nasiruddin Haqqani was killed in Islamabad while travelling in a car with a few other unidentified people," one Taliban source said, adding that the attack took place on Sunday. "His body has been moved to North Waziristan."

US drone strike kills four in NW Pakistan

A US drone strike targeting a rebel compound killed at least four militants in a restive Pakistani tribal region near the Afghan border Friday, officials said. The strike took place in the Dandey Darpakhel area, five kilometres (three miles) north of Miranshah, the main town of the North Waziristan tribal region, a stronghold for Taliban and Al-Qaeda linked militants. It came a day after three insurgents were killed in another drone strike that also targeted a rebel compound near Miranshah.

Bomb kills two soldiers in northwest Pakistan

A bomb explosion on Wednesday killed two Pakistani soldiers and wounded four others in a restive Pakistani tribal region near the Afghan border, security officials said. The explosion took place in a village in the South Waziristan tribal region. "Two soldiers embraced shahadat (martyrdom) and four others were injured when an improvised explosive device planted by terrorists exploded on roadside in (a) village," a senior security official told AFP.

Militant attack kills soldier in northwest Pakistan

Militants attacked an army checkpost in Pakistan's troubled northwest near the Afghan border, killing one soldier and wounding three others, officials said Monday. The incident took place late Sunday night in Miranshah, the main town of the North Waziristan tribal region where Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked militants have carved out strongholds. "A group of militants attacked the checkpost, killing one soldier and wounding three others," a local security official said, adding that the militants fled immediately afterwards.
