French soldiers sweep rebel stronghold in Malian desert

Under the cover of large acacia trees, the militants' camp was invisible from the sky and had probably been deserted only a few hours before the arrival of French troops. The soldiers had made the discovery on day two of Operation Gustav, a hunt for Islamist fighters in a valley in northern Mali and one of France's largest military operations during its three-month intervention in its former colony.

France revives charred Mali market to 'win the peace'

After routing an Islamist insurgency in Mali early this year, France is making sure it also "wins the peace" in the west African state -- and the central market in the eastern city of Gao is acting as a symbol of that strategy. The once-bustling sprawl of vendors' covered stalls and stands on the banks of the Niger River was all but consumed by fire on February 21, when flames spread from sheds in the courtyard of the nearby town hall being used as cover by an infiltrating Islamist militia.

North Mali's drinkers toast France for return of beer

Close to the banks of the Niger river, men in the north Malian city of Gao gather at nightfall to drink beer, in one of the daily signs of life in a town whose residents are working to wipe out all traces of hardline Islamist occupation. With its walls of red clay, its white chairs and its tepid French export beer, Le Petit Dogon bar reopened last week after nine months of closure enforced by the armed Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO), whose fundamentalists were driven out by French-led troops this year.

Mali faces food crisis as refugees return

Tethered to the roof of a crowded bus in Gao's former "Sharia Square", suitcases and boxes carry what few belongings the Maiga family could take as they fled when the town was overrun by jihadists. Nine months later Bibata and her children are back, after northern Mali's largest city was liberated by a French-led intervention that drove the Islamist occupation out of the region's main cities and back into the vast desert.

Basketball girls back on 'Sharia Square' in Mali's Gao

As night falls on "Sharia Square" in Gao in northern Mali, a score of youths are practising on a basketball court, closely watched by their coach. Now that armed extremists have left, several girls in shiny tracksuit bottoms and low-necked tops have joined the boys. Oumar Tonko Cisse, a retired coach in his 60s, is the founder of the Centre for Training and Promoting Sports (CFPS) in Gao. He is also president of the centre and its trainer, he says with a laugh.

France ready to start Mali withdrawal despite Gao attack -admiral

OTTAWA, Feb 22 (Reuters) - France is still ready to start pulling its forces out of Mali next month despite a rebel attack on the key town of Gao, the French commander of the defense staff said on Friday. Admiral Edouard Guillaud told reporters after a speech in Ottawa that he was not surprised by Thursday's attack in Gao, when 15 Islamists were killed by French and Malian troops.

Mali troops fire heavy weapons at Gao town hall

Malian soldiers on Friday fired rocket-propelled grenades at the town hall in Gao, where armed Islamist forces had been holed up the previous day during heavy fighting, an AFP journalist reported. It was not immediately possible to determine whether Islamists were still active inside the building in the northern town. A Malian soldier earlier said "many" bodies of dead fighters wore explosives belts, both in the town hall and the nearby court house. He added that mines had been laid in the area.
