RugbyU: Sharks open Super 15 lead over Brumbies, Chiefs

The Coastal Sharks opened a six-point break at the top of Super Rugby with a South African derby win as champions Waikato Chiefs lost narrowly at home this weekend. The Sharks, seeking a first southern hemisphere inter-provincial championship title under former World Cup-winning coach Jake White, downed the Central Cheetahs 19-8 in Durban to move to 31 points. An Israel Folau try in the opening 28 seconds proved the difference as the New South Wales Waratahs ended a nine-year Super 15 losing streak against the Northern Bulls on Saturday. Folau scored his ninth try of the season on his return from a throat injury to propel the Waratahs to a hard-fought 19-12 win over the South Africans in Sydney. The Waratahs, watched by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, ended a losing eight-match run against the Bulls in what was their first win over the triple Super Rugby champions since 2005.

Canterbury Crusaders scored four last-quarter tries to defeat Central Cheetahs 52-31 Saturday after a see-saw Super 15 struggle in Bloemfontein. It was the first clean sweep by the New Zealanders in South Africa since 2008 after comfortably overcoming the Golden Lions in Johannesburg last weekend. And it was the first victory by the record seven-time Super Rugby champions over the Cheetahs since 2007 in the republic.

The Coastal Sharks will be out to extend their Super 15 lead this weekend against the Golden Lions, while the ACT Brumbies aim to stay top of the Australian conference. Jake White's Sharks are on top of both the South African conference and the overall standings with 23 points from six games. The Durban-based outfit are coming off a bye and travel to Johannesburg where they have only lost three times in 10 encounters with the Lions. "We've had a break now and that was very good for us as a team, getting away from things," flanker Marcell Coetzee said.
