RugbyU: Woodward points record as Rebels stun Brumbies

Fullback Jason Woodward scored a club record 27 points as the Melbourne Rebels upset Australian Super 15 conference leaders ACT Brumbies 32-24 on Friday. Woodward could do little wrong, amassing a try, two conversions and six penalties as the Rebels fought back from 10-3 down at halftime. The Brumbies, last season's Super Rugby finalists, could not handle the inspired Rebels in the second half as the home side surged to victory after trailing 17-6 in the 48th minute.

RugbyU: Wounded Sharks take on Folau-less Waratahs

Injury-hit leaders Coastal Sharks will be without key players and opponents NSW Waratahs are missing Wallaby ace Israel Folau in this weekend's feature Super 15 match. The Durban-based Sharks, leading the competition by two points from Australia's ACT Brumbies, have been dealt a blow with the loss for the season of lock Pieter-Steph du Toit, while fly-half Patrick Lambie (bicep) and scrum-half Cobus Reinach (fractured hand) are out for six weeks.

Australian rugby chief Bill Pulver said Monday he is confident the relaunched National Rugby Championship can prove the doubters wrong and make a financial profit in its first year. The Australian Rugby Union (ARU) Monday announced nine teams to compete in its new domestic Rugby competition, which will kick off in August this year. The competition will include two teams from Queensland, four from New South Wales and one each from the Australian Capital Territory, Victoria and Western Australia.

The Sharks fell 23-19 to the Northern Bulls in a South African derby in Pretoria, ending their run of four wins. The Durban-based outfit's overall lead was cut to just two points from Australia's ACT Brumbies after the Chiefs were upset 18-15 by the rejuvenated Western Force in Perth.

RugbyU: Matfield leads Bulls to key Super 15 victory

Legendary lock Victor Matfield marked his return as captain by leading Northern Bulls to a 23-19 victory over Coastal Sharks in a captivating Super 15 clash Saturday. Matfield, the second most capped Springbok with 110, ended a two-year retirement to play for the Pretoria outfit in the southern hemisphere inter-provincial championship this season. And when skipper and fellow lock Flip van der Merwe was forced to withdraw injured 48 hours before kick-off, Matfield, 36, was assigned a role he last had in the 2011 season.

RugbyU: Brumbies grind out win over Stormers

Winger Robbie Coleman scored a try double as the ACT Brumbies downed the Western Stormers 25-15 to go back to the top of the Australian Super 15 conference on Saturday. Coleman scored two of the Brumbies three tries, but it was his second touchdown in the 62nd minute that gave the home side the edge in a tight match against the South Africans. With the Brumbies clinging to a 13-10 lead, Coleman chased down a kick ahead by captain and number eight Ben Mowen.
