Queen Beatrix reopens Rijksmuseum after 10-year revamp

Renewed Rijksmuseum revamps the Golden Age

Amsterdam's world-famous Rijksmuseum revealed its eagerly-awaited 21st century identity Thursday after a vast 10-year renovation aimed at breathing new life into its unparallelled collection of Golden Age masterpieces. "The Rijksmuseum stands at the threshold of a new page of its history," the museum's general director Wim Pijbes told journalists at a press preview of the 375-million euro (480-million dollar) revamp, masterminded by Spanish architects Cruz y Ortiz.

Randstad to buy leading HR company's staffing business

Dutch temporary job agency Randstad announced Thursday it will buy the staffing activities of its competitor USG People in a multi-million euro deal to boost its position as a top player in the European marketplace. "Randstad is to acquire staffing activities of USG People in Spain, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Austria," in an investment worth 20 million euros ($25 million), Randstad said in a statement. The Amsterdam-based group said the acquisition will add some 434 million euros in annual revenue.

Rembrandt's Night Watch goes home to revamped Rijksmuseum

Rembrandt's "The Night Watch", a masterpiece of the Dutch Golden Age, was finally returned to its home in Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum on Wednesday following nine years of extensive renovation works. The huge oil painting, correctly titled "The Company of captain Frans Banning Cocq and lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburch preparing to march out," has hung in an adjacent wing of the world-famous Amsterdam museum for the past nine years while the building underwent renovations.
