Dutch coalition party threatens to oppose F-35 fighter purchase

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - A Dutch order for Lockheed Martin's F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, which earlier this week was seen as a boost for the troubled project, is in doubt again after one of the coalition parties threatened to oppose the deal. Defence Minister Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, of Prime Minister Mark Rutte's Liberal Party, announced the decision to buy 37 F-35s on Tuesday as part of the 2014 budget. But on Thursday night the Labour Party, Rutte's coalition partner, said it still has misgivings about the deal.

Netherlands government will reprivatize ABN Amro via stock market listing; no firm time frame

AMSTERDAM - The Dutch government plans to re-privatize ABN Amro NV, the bank that was nationalized five years ago to help prevent a meltdown of the financial system, via a stock market listing that will happen next year at the earliest, Prime Minister Mark Rutte said Friday. "Our conclusion is that this bank can return to the market," Rutte told reporters, adding that ABN would need at least a year to prepare for a public listing and that government officials have asked the company to start getting ready.

Dutch parliament to investigate Prism allegations

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The Dutch parliament will investigate whether alleged eavesdropping by the United States extended to the Netherlands, after a majority of lawmakers indicated on Wednesday they would back a full parliamentary inquiry. Four parties, including both members of the governing coalition, supported an investigation into whether security services in the staunchly pro-U.S. Netherlands had made use of illegally gathered material, media reported.

ABN Amro's chief executive says Dutch bank is ready to return to the private sector

AMSTERDAM - The chief executive of ABN Amro says the Dutch bank is ready to be privatized. Gerrit Zalm said on a late-night television talk show Wednesday that the bank is sufficiently capitalized and had remained profitable despite a recession in the Netherlands. "We're ready," said Zalm, a former finance minister. The country's current government has said the earliest the bank would be reprivatized is 2014. ABN Amro was nationalized in 2008 to avoid a meltdown of the Dutch financial system. The rescue cost taxpayers at least 32 billion euros ($42 billion).
