Beatrix: a queen who transformed Dutch royalty

The Netherlands' energetic Queen Beatrix, who on Tuesday will abdicate in favour of her son Crown Prince Willem-Alexander, has won many Dutch hearts in her almost 33 years on the throne by giving the monarchy a modern, hard-working image. Stepping into the shoes of her much-loved mother Juliana in 1980 at the age of 42, Beatrix quickly set out to make her mark on the country she was destined to rule by birth.

Dutch enthronement: the key moments

Here are the key moments on Tuesday when Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander becomes king, succeeding his mother Queen Beatrix after 33 years on the throne. All times local (GMT+2). 10:00 am -- Queen Beatrix arrives to sign her abdication in the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. Willem-Alexander, who turns 46 on Saturday, and his Argentine-born wife Maxima witness the document. Beatrix reverts to her title of princess and her son becomes king.

Die-hard Dutch republicans target king's enthronement

While the Netherlands parties in gaudy orange as the new king takes the throne on April 30, a small group of defiant republicans will protest the monarchy's very existence by wearing white. Anti-royalists are surprisingly few in a country that fancies itself as egalitarian but where the national colour comes from the royal family's name -- the House of Orange-Nassau. And in these economically sluggish times, they say it's time for regime change from an overpaid and overprivileged family.

New king of Netherlands will reign with clipped wings

By Thomas Escritt AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The Dutch will have their first king in more than 120 years when Willem-Alexander succeeds his mother Queen Beatrix this month, bringing a more hands-off style to the throne at a time when the royal family's political powers are already in decline. April 30, or Queen's Day, is a popular celebration of the House of Orange when the Dutch dress up in the royal colour and party on the streets from dawn until late at night.

Dutch close schools after 'serious threat' of shooting

Middle schools in the Dutch university city of Leiden will remained closed on Monday after police said they had received a "serious threat" of a shooting being planned at one. "Police have received mention about a possible school shooting (being planned) in Leiden," said a statement issued late Sunday evening. "In light of this serious threat, it has been decided not to take any risk and therefore all middle schools will remain closed on Monday," the statement added.
