At least 36 people were killed Sunday in regime air strikes and aerial attacks with explosive-packed barrels on the northern Syrian city of Aleppo, a monitoring group said. Syria army edges forward in Aleppo

The Syrian army is edging its way towards southeastern Aleppo as it battles rebel fighters for control of the northern city, a monitor and a pro-government daily said Tuesday. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it was a "limited advance" but the first by government troops in more than a year, and that residents fearing a major operation were fleeing the region. The troops have gained some ground in Aleppo in the past few weeks, taking advantage of the fact that rebels who hold larges swathes of territory have turned their guns against jihadist fighters.

At least 10 people were killed in a regime air strike on Tuesday targeting an opposition-held neighbourhood of Aleppo in northern Syria, a monitoring group said. "An air strike hit the area of a bus station... in Jisr al-Hajj," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, whose director told AFP that "we have documented 10 deaths". The Observatory distributed amateur video footage showing a huge fire in the area, located in the westernmost part of Aleppo city. Warplanes also targeted the Ansari neighbourhood farther east, the Observatory said.

Syria govt warplanes bomb Aleppo, killing 16

Government warplanes on Saturday launched raids on the northern Syrian city of Aleppo and the surrounding countryside, killing 16 people, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. "Warplanes bombed areas in the neighbourhoods of Tariq al-Bab and Karam al-Jabal in Aleppo," killing five people, including children, the Britain-based monitoring group said. The two areas are controlled by opposition fighters who have been battling forces loyal to the government of President Bashar al-Assad since they launched a major offensive in the city in the summer of 2012.
