EU court gets T-Mobile Austria telecom merger appeal

VIENNA (Reuters) - T-Mobile Austria claimed partial victory on Monday in its legal battle against the allocation of radio frequencies resulting from rival Hutchison Whampoa's takeover of Orange Austria. The Deutsche Telekom unit said in a blog entry on its website that an administrative court in Vienna had referred the case to the European Court of Justice.

New sales approach helps Deutsche Telekom stem losses of US customers; but revenues slip

Washington AG slaps T-Mobile USA for not warning about catch to new 'no-contract' plans

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Washington state's chief prosecutor says there's a catch to T-Mobile's new cellphone plans, which replace the traditional two-year service contract with an installment plan for phone buyers. One of the benefits of the new plan is that buyers can cancel their service at any time. But Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson says the company hasn't told customers that they have to pay the full remaining cost of the phone if they cancel service; they can't remain on the installment plan.

T-Mobile USA-MetroPCS tie-up to be completed next week

Deutsche Telekom said Wednesday that the merger of its subsidiary T-Mobile USA with rival wireless carrier MetroPCS was due to be completed next week after approval by MetroPCS shareholders. The German telecommunications giant said in a written statement that it applauded the decision by MetroPCS shareholders to approve the agreement at their meeting in Texas on Wednesday. The move "clears the path for a new, combined, larger and more powerful mobile services provider in the USA", the Deutsche Telekom statement said.

France Telecom bets on 4G to blunt pain at home

EE signs up over 300,000 to 4G

LONDON (Reuters) - EE, Britain's biggest mobile operator, said 318,000 people had signed up to take its superfast 4G broadband service, giving subscriber numbers for the first time since it stole a march on its rivals by launching early. The joint-venture, owned by France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom, gained a head start in the 4G race when it re-used its existing airwaves to launch services last October. Its rivals will launch services this year.

Liberty Global preparing Kabel Deutschland bid - report

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - U.S. cable company Liberty Global <LBTYA.O> is preparing a takeover offer for Kabel Deutschland <KD8Gn.DE>, Manager Magazin reported, sending shares in Germany's biggest cable company higher. By preparing a bid, Liberty Global wants to steal a march on UK-based telecommunications company Vodafone <VOD.L>, which is also interested in buying Kabel Deutschland, the monthly magazine said in an excerpt of an article to be published on Friday. The excerpt did not cite sources.

Deutsche Telekom tweaks charges in German mobile turf war

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Deutsche Telekom followed its three main rivals and revised its German mobile charges on Monday as the turf war intensifies Europe's biggest national market. KPN's E-Plus, Vodafone Germany and Telefonica Germany's O2 have already changed their prices as German consumers catch up with the rest of the continent by switching to smartphones from basic mobiles. Deutsche Telekom said it would offer customers who already own a mobile device a 20 percent discount and add free data access to all packages.
