Saudi Arabia detains 10 more in Iran spying case

RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia has detained 10 more people in a spying case it announced in March that it said was linked to Iran, state television reported on Tuesday. "Initial investigation carried out by the authorities led to the detention of 10 others for involvement in spying activities," state television news channel al-Ekhbariya reported, citing the Interior Ministry.

Saudi executes 5 Yemenis for murder

Saudi Arabia on Tuesday executed five Yemenis and displayed their bodies in public for killing a national and forming a gang that committed robberies across several towns in the kingdom, the interior ministry said. New York-based watchdog Human Rights Watch (HRW) slammed the punishment as "outrageous." The ministry later also announced, in statements carried by the official SPA news agency, that a Saudi was beheaded in the southwestern region of Assir for the murder of a fellow citizen. The five were executed in the town of Jizan, also southwest Saudi Arabia.

Prince Mishal bin Abdulaziz al Saud, a brother of Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah, and his son Prince Abdulaziz bin Mishal, had previously argued they had sovereign immunity from suit but the courts rejected that stance.

Saudi beheads Syrian for drug trafficking

Saudi authorities beheaded on Monday a Syrian man after convicting him of drug trafficking, the interior ministry said. Mohammed Yousuf Ezzeddine was executed in the northern city of Qurayat, near the borders with Jordan, the ministry said in a statement carried by SPA state news agency. His beheading brings to 41 the number of people executed in Saudi Arabia since the start of 2013, according to an AFP tally. In 2012, the kingdom executed 76 people, according to a count based on official figures.

Saudi Arabia beheaded one of its citizens on Sunday after he was convicted of killing a relative in the kingdom's north, the interior ministry said. Awad Rawili stabbed to death Jazaa Rawili, a relative, during an argument , said the statement carried by the official SPA news agency. He was executed in the northern city of Araar. His beheading brings to 39 the number of people executed in Saudi Arabia since the beginning of the year, according to an AFP tally.

Pakistani beheaded in Saudi for drug trafficking

Saudi authorities on Wednesday beheaded a Pakistani man found guilty of smuggling drugs into the conservative Muslim kingdom, the interior ministry said. The man was caught attempting to smuggle an amount of heroin hidden inside his stomach, the ministry said in a statement carried by SPA state news agency. He was executed in the city of Riyadh. His beheading brings to 38 the number of people executed in Saudi Arabia since the beginning of the year, according to an AFP tally.

Saudi to retain ban on non-Muslim places of worship

Ultra-conservative Saudi Arabia will retain its longstanding ban on non-Muslim places of worship, Justice Minister Mohammed al-Issa said in comments reported by the Saudi media on Wednesday. As Saudi Arabia is "home to the Muslim holy places, it does not allow the establishment of non-Muslim places of worship," the Al-Hayat newspaper quoted Issa as telling European MPs in Brussels.

Saudi hurt in Boston was wife of student

"One of the injured is a Saudi citizen, the wife of a student there. Saudi executed for machinegun murder

Saudi authorities on Sunday beheaded a citizen in the western city of Medina after he was convicted of shooting dead another man, the interior ministry said. Sultan bin Rashid al-Mutairi had been found guilty of using a machinegun to kill Mused bin Nayer al-Mutairi after a dispute between the pair, the ministry said in a statement carried by the official SPA news agency. His beheading brings to 34 the number of people executed in Saudi Arabia since the beginning of the year, according to an AFP tally.

Saudi frees Jordanian reform activist

Amnesty International said on Wednesday Saudi authorities have released a Jordanian reform activist who had been held since the beginning of the year in a case that drew concern over his rights. "Khalid al-Natur, who had been held incommunicado in Saudi Arabia since 6 January was released on 7 April," Amnesty said. "Throughout his detention, he was denied access to family and lawyers, and was not charged with any offence." Natur, a website developer, was detained after he and four associates arrived at Riyadh airport on a business trip, according to Amnesty.
