Slovakia's in-form Peter Sagan came home alone to win the 75th edition of the Ghent-Wevelgem classic, the Cannondale rider crossing the line almost half a minute clear of Slovenian Borut Bozic. Belgium's Greg Van Avermaet took third. Sagan, 23, who was part of an 11-man breakaway group, made his push for victory three-and-a-half kilometres from the line for his sixth success of the season.

Boonen quits Gent-Wevelgem after crash

(Reuters) - Belgium's former world champion Tom Boonen crashed during the Gent-Wevelgem classic race on Sunday, one week before he was due to defend his title in the Tour of Flanders. Boonen hit the deck with some 65 kilometres left and looked to be in some pain. He got back on his bike but a few minutes later quit the race which was won in impressive fashion by Slovak Peter Sagan.

Cycling-Katusha included as 19th team on elite World Tour

PARIS, Feb 18 (Reuters) - Russian team Katusha have been added as a 19th team to the elite World Tour after winning an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) overturning the rejection of their original application. "The UCI today announced that exceptionally there are 19 registered UCI ProTeams in the 2013 season," the International Cycling Union (UCI) said in a statement on Monday. "The decision to have 19 as opposed to 18 teams was taken by the Professional Cycling Council today."

Cycling: Andy Schleck drops out of Tour of Mediterranean

Former Tour de France champion Andy Schleck dropped out of the Tour of Mediterranean on Wednesday, failing to complete the first stage due to breathing problems. The pull-out is yet another setback for the 27-year-old, 2010 Tour de France winner who dropped out of the Tour Down Under in the final stage and has been hit by a spate of injuries that meant he failed to start the 2012 Tour de France. "This morning I already had breathing problems," explained Schleck.

Cycling-Katusha receive permission to compete in second division

MOSCOW, Jan 15 (Reuters) - Katusha, barred from competing in the World Tour in 2013 by the International Cycling Union (UCI), have been cleared to race in the second division after improvements in their anti-doping controls. "Following the UCI Licences Commission decision on 10 December 2012 to refuse Katusha's registration as UCI ProTour (first division), the team introduced anti-doping measures that have prompted the Licences Commission to grant it registration as UCI Professional Continental Team (second division)," a UCI statement said on Tuesday.
