Hashimoto clarifies remarks on "comfort women" after flak

Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto on Wednesday sought to clarify his remarks on a system to recruit women into sexual servitude for Japan's soldiers during World War II, saying he personally does not condone the scheme. Two days after he made controversial remarks that the so-called comfort women were "necessary to maintain discipline" in the Japanese military, Hashimoto told reporters he simply stated a fact that people at the time had that kind of view.

Bangladesh war crime court indicts British Muslim leader

Bangladesh's war crimes court on Thursday indicted a Bangladesh-born British Muslim leader for his alleged role in the murder of top intellectuals during the country's 1971 liberation war. "The court has taken into cognizance the charges of war crimes against Chowdhury Mueen-Uddin and issued a warrant to arrest him," International Crimes Tribunal registrar Nasiruddin Mahmud told AFP.

Anti-piracy group: 5 sailors kidnapped off Nigeria coast in latest attack in dangerous waters

LAGOS, Nigeria - An anti-piracy watchdog says five sailors have been kidnapped off the coast of Nigeria's oil-rich southern delta. The International Maritime Bureau said in a note Monday that the five sailors had been kidnapped Thursday some 45 nautical miles off the coast of Brass. The bureau said the pirates came on a speed boat and a supply vessel, attacking the sailor's container ship. The bureau said the pirates kidnapped the five sailors and left the rest of the crew unharmed.

Pirates kidnap five foreign sailors off Nigeria

Pirates stormed a cargo ship off Nigeria's oil-producing southern coast, kidnapping five foreign sailors and stealing cash, a watchdog and a security source said Monday. The International Maritime Bureau (IMB) said the April 25 incident was carried out by "14 heavily armed pirates" who boarded the vessel 45 nautical miles off the Nigerian town of Brass. They forced their way into the ship's saferoom, making off with crew and cash, the IMB said in a statement.

ICC war crimes suspect killed in Darfur

Darfur rebel leader Saleh Jerbo, charged with war crimes by the International Criminal Court, has been killed in the war-ravaged western Sudanese region, fellow rebels and his defence team said. "The defence of Mr Saleh Mohammed Jerbo Jamus hereby notifies the trial chamber, with great sadness... that Mr Jerbo died in North Darfur, Sudan on the afternoon of 19 April 2013, and was buried the same day," said an ICC document published late Tuesday.

The United Nations has been hit by a second war crimes court dispute in a week with Rwanda trying to stop the UN Security Council praising the International Criminal Court. The storm comes only days after the United States boycotted a UN General Assembly debate where Serbia's president launched a fierce attack on international war crimes courts. Rwanda is organizing a Security Council meeting Monday on conflict prevention in Africa when traditionally the 15-member body would release a statement.

ICT to decide Mobarak’s fate on Apr 23

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Thursday fixed April 23 for order whether it would indict detained Mobarak Hossain of Akhaura, Brahmnabaria, for his alleged involvement in perpetrating crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice ATM Fazle Kabir, will also pass order on the same day whether it would set the accused free from the charges of war crimes and entertain his bail plea.
