Councillors, Oilers agree to split final $30M cost to green light new arena

EDMONTON - The on-again-off-again deal to build a new rink for the Edmonton Oilers is on — again. City councillors and the Edmonton Oilers have agreed to split the cost of the final missing $30 million needed to green light the wavy-shaped steel and glass structure in the city's downtown in time for the 2016-17 NHL season. Construction is slated to start in the spring of 2014. The city plans to pay off some of its debt through increased tax revenues from shops and businesses expected to spring up around the arena.

The Presidents’ Trophy-winning Chicago Blackhawks are rounding into form after two games of their Western Conference first-round series against the eighth-seeded Minnesota Wild. The Blackhawks will attempt to take a 3-0 stranglehold on the series when they visit Minnesota on Sunday. Chicago looked much more comfortable in its 5-2 victory in Game 2 than it did in a 2-1 overtime triumph in Game 1, firing 48 shots at Wild netminder Josh Harding on Friday after managing 37 in the opener.

NHL: Avalanche land top draft pick from lottery

The Colorado Avalanche, who finished with the second-worst record in the National Hockey League this season, will pick first in June's NHL Draft after winning the top spot in a lottery Monday night. The Avalanche had the second-best chance of claiming the top pick at 18.8 percent but came through to the disappointment of Florida, which had the best chance at the top pick, 1-in-4 odds, but must settle for the second selection.

NHL: Avalanche sack Sacco as coach

Joe Sacco was fired as coach of the National Hockey League's Colorado Avalanche on Sunday, one day after the season ended with the team missing the playoffs for the third campaign in a row. In a season shortened by a lockout over a money dispute between club owners and players, the Avalanche finished last in the Western Conference with 39 points at 16-25 with seven overtime losses. Only Florida was worse in the NHL. "The organization believes a change of leadership behind the bench is needed going forward," Avalanche general manager Greg Sherman said.

The Chicago Blackhawks' record point streak to start the National Hockey League season ended after 24 games as they suffered a 6-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Friday. NHL-Oilers' Hall suspended two games for kneeing

Feb 22 (Reuters) - Edmonton Oilers forward Taylor Hall has been suspended for two games for kneeing Minnesota Wild forward Cal Clutterbuck, the National Hockey League said on Friday. The incident occurred late in the third period of Edmonton's 3-1 loss on Thursday when Hall rammed into Clutterbuck, sending him out of the game. NHL-Canucks rally from slow to start to extinguish Flames

Feb 9 (Reuters) - The Vancouver Canucks started slowly but roared into life in the second period to claim a fifth straight victory with a thumping 5-1 home win over the Calgary Flames on Saturday. Lee Stempniak had opened the scoring for the Flames late in the first period before the Canucks (7-2-2) bagged two goals in a 27-second span midway through the second to seize control of the game.
