Golf: Mickelson leaves Merion for daughter's graduation

Phil Mickelson, a five-time US Open runner-up, skipped practice for the 113th US Open at Merion this week to fly across the United States for his daughter's eighth-grade graduation. The four-time major champion, who turns 43 on Sunday, made the choice to leave suburban Philadelphia and return to his Southern California home for the Wednesday afternoon ceremony after heavy rains drenched the course on Monday. "I was scheduled to return to San Diego after my 2:30 press conference Tuesday. I came back Monday," Mickelson said in a statement released Tuesday.

Golf: Late birdies lift English to St. Jude victory

Harris English fired back-to-back birdies at 16 and 17 on Sunday en route to a final-round 69 and a two-stroke victory in the US PGA Tour's $5.7 million St. Jude Classic. English captured his first PGA Tour title with a 12-under-par total of 268 after four rounds on the par-70 TPC Southwind course. He held off four-time major champion Phil Mickelson, who carded a 67 to share second place with Scott Stallings on 270.

Golf: Mickelson, Watney share PGA lead

Phil Mickelson and Nick Watney each stumbled with the lead on Saturday, leaving the US duo tied atop the leaderboard after three rounds at the US PGA Wells Fargo Championship. Mickelson took a double bogey at the par-5 15th and a bogey at 16 to hand Watney the lead, only to have Watney double bogey the par-3 17th and leave both even on eight-under 208 for 54 holes in the $6.7 million event at Quail Hollow. The lefthanded American Mickelson finished on 73 while Watney settled for a 71.

Potter Jr. wins Masters Par-3 Contest in playoff

American Ted Potter Jr. won the Masters Par-3 Contest on Wednesday, beating Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar in a playoff for the annual short-course competition.Five players finished tied for the lead at four-under 23 after the short, nine-hole layout but Ernie Els and Nick Watney opted out of the playoff, leaving just Potter, Mickelson and Kuchar to shoot it out. Mickelson was eliminated after the first extra hole when he made a par and his two opponents both birdied the hole.

Up to 60 players could win Masters - Langer
