A Chinese fishing vessel that crashed into one of the Philippines' most famous reefs damaged almost 4,000 square metres of centuries-old coral, the marine park said on Saturday. Some 3,902 square metres (42,000 square feet) of coral was destroyed after the boat became stranded in the Tubbataha marine park -- a UNESCO World Heritage-listed coral reef -- the park management said. "The damage the Chinese vessel caused to the reef is heart-breaking," Angelique Songco, the head of the marine park said in a statement after experts assessed the affected area.

Chinese poachers' ship hauled off Philippine reef

A Chinese fishing vessel that ran aground on one of the Philippines' most famous coral reefs more than a week ago was removed on Friday, the coast guard said. The 48-metre (157-foot) ship was hauled by a tugboat from Tubbataha, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed coral reef near the western island of Palawan where its crew are facing serious charges, a spokeswoman said. "The hull of the vessel is still okay so according to (the salvage team), it is safe to tow the vessel," Lieutenant Greanata Jude told AFP.

Chinese poachers could face 20 years over pangolins

Twelve suspected Chinese poachers could face up to 20 years in prison for possession of hundreds of dead pangolins or scaly anteaters, Philippine wildlife authorities said Wednesday. The boat carrying the 12 Chinese men ran aground on Tubbataha marine park, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed coral reef near Palawan, last week. "We are preparing a case. We are still compiling supporting documents (but) it carries a heavy penalty of 12 to 20 years imprisonment," Adelina Villena, environment officer of the province of Palawan, told AFP.

PCG transports 128 Filipinos displaced in Sabah row

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Saturday announced that one of its ships have transported 128 Filipinos displaced by the fighting between followers of Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III and Malaysian security forces, to safe havens in Taganak, Tawi-Tawi.A newly born child was among the 128 people assisted by the PCG. "Officials and crew members of PCG search and rescue vessel BRP Nueva Vizcaya (SARV-3502) ... went to Taganak, Tawi-Tawi to transport (the) returnees," it said.The PCG said the 128 returnees included 58 adults and 70 children.
