Israeli gas finds secure its self sufficiency

Gas production from huge offshore deposits along its Mediterranean coast is enabling Israel to shift from costly and unreliable imports to a growing self-sufficiency and the potential to become an energy exporter. Politicians and lobbyists are already fiercely grappling over how much of the newly-discovered natural resource can be sold abroad, with the environmental lobby urging caution over the level of exports.

Moniz, sworn in as energy secretary, delays action on LNG exports

WASHINGTON - Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said Tuesday he will put on hold about 20 applications to export liquefied natural gas until he reviews studies by the Energy Department and others on what impact the exports would have on domestic natural gas supplies and prices. Moniz, who was sworn in Tuesday as the nation's new energy secretary, said he promised during his confirmation hearing that he would "review what's out there" before acting on proposals to export natural gas. Among the things Moniz said he wants to review is whether the data in the studies are outdated.

U.S. OKs liquefied natural gas exports to Japan, others

The United States said Friday it will allow exports of domestically produced liquefied natural gas to Japan and other countries to which it is not bound by free trade agreements, authorizing a plan to deliver shale and other gases from Texas. Japan hailed the move as it had been asking the United States to lift a ban on LNG exports to meet its energy needs after most of its nuclear reactors were suspended following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster as well as rising prices of energy imports.

Obama admin endorses Texas LNG export project; 2nd project to get Energy Dept. backing

WASHINGTON - The Energy Department on Friday conditionally approved a Texas company's proposal to export liquefied natural gas, only the second such project allowed to move forward amid a production boom that has led to glut of domestic natural gas. The action would allow Freeport LNG Expansion L.P. to export up to 1.4 billion cubic feet of liquefied natural gas per day from its terminal near Freeport, Texas, south of Houston. The DOE said granting such a permit for shipments to countries that do not have free trade agreements with the U.S. was in the public interest.

GDF Suez reveals huge US LNG deal with Japanese firms

French energy group GDF Suez has signed a joint-venture with US firm Sempra Energy and Japanese groups Mitsubishi and Mitsui relating to the construction of a huge liquefied natural gas factory in the United States, it said on Friday. The deputy managing director responsible for gas operations at GDF Suez, Jean-Marie Dauger, said that "the Cameron LNG project will enable the group to diversify and increase its LNG (liquefied natural gas) interests and also its flexibility in supplying existing and future markets in zones of strong growth."

What caused the tanks to explode wasn't known.

Australia's Woodside explores floating gas plant

Australian energy giant Woodside Petroleum said Tuesday it was mulling untested floating platform technology to forge ahead with its controversial Browse liquefied natural gas (LNG) project. Woodside shelved the major gas export project, worth more than $40 billion, earlier this month after concluding a proposed onshore precinct at James Price Point north of Broome in Western Australia was not commercially viable.

Rosneft, Japan's Marubeni ink LNG deal

Russia's Rosneft state oil giant announced Wednesday that it had signed a framework agreement with Japan's Marubeni Corporation for the possible construction of a liquified natural gas plant in the Russian Far East. The announcement marks one of Rosneft's biggest efforts to date to diversify beyond the oil market and present a direct challenge to Russia's natural gas firm Gazprom.

Iran to export liquefied natural gas soon

Iran has achieved self-sufficiency in the production of liquefied natural gas and will export the product in the future, Press TV reported Sunday, quoting an Iranian deputy oil minister. Alireza Zeighami said Iran has stopped importing 800 tons of liquefied natural gas, or LNG, from neighboring states every day, which it used to do, since it became self-sufficient in the product. "Following the complete development...
