Cypriot wildcard Marcos Baghdatis, Croatian Ivo Karlovic and Germany's Benjamin Becker eased to straight-sets victories on Tuesday to book second-round matches with seeded players at the $647,000 ATP US Indoor Championship. Becker saved all three break points that he faced in beating Slovakia's Lukas Lacko 6-3, 6-2 and advanced to a second-round clash with defending champion and top seed Kei Nishikori of Japan.

Britain's Andy Murray picked apart racquet-smashing techniques after joining a grand tradition of bat-breakers at the Australian Open. While the Wimbledon champion wasn't in the same league as legendary smasher Marcos Baghdatis, he was deliberate and deadly during his fourth-round match against French journeyman Stephane Robert. After missing three match points against the 119th-ranked 'lucky loser', and being taken to a fourth set, Murray destroyed his racquet with a swift, single strike to the floor.

Tennis: Patchy Kohlschreiber grinds out Auckland win

Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber held off a gutsy fightback from Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta to reach the second round of the Auckland Open on Tuesday. Fifth seed Kohlschreiber, who won the Auckland tournament in 2008 and was a finalist last year, had to dig deep for a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 win over Carreno Busta. The German looked to be cruising as he took the first set, before Carreno Busta's serve found its range and Kohlschreiber found himself in a dogfight as his error rate climbed.

World number four David Ferrer returns to Kuala Lumpur to headline the Malaysian Open, aiming to get back the winning feeling after an inconsistent year. Last year's leading ATP winner with seven titles, the Spaniard has only claimed two crowns this year, in Argentina in January and New Zealand a month later. Big-serving Berdych moves into fourth round

John Isner, seeking his second title in as many weeks, booked a semi-final matchup with Dmitry Tursunov on Friday at the $1.76 million ATP and WTA Washington Open. US eighth seed Isner, who won last week in Atlanta, fired 18 aces to defeat Cyprus' Marcos Baghdatis 6-7 (5/7), 6-4, 6-4 while Russia's Tursunov outlasted Australia's Marinko Matosevic 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) in another quarter-final at the hardcourt event. "I was pretty confident even though I lost the first set," Isner said. "I know I'm not going to win every tie-breaker. I was in a good rhythm and serving well.
