Ukraine: Jailed former interior minister pardoned

Ukraine's president has pardoned a former interior minister and a close ally of imprisoned former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. President Viktor Yanukovych on Sunday signed a decree to pardon Yuri Lutsenko who is serving a four-year sentence on corruption charges. Tymoshenko is also serving a seven-year prison sentence after being convicted in 2011 of abuse office. The West has called both cases politically motivated.

US praises Ukraine pardon of opposition figures

The United States on Monday praised Ukraine's President Viktor Yanukovych for pardoning two prominent allies of jailed former premier Yulia Tymoshenko, but also called for her release. "We insist on her release, as Yulia Volodymyrivna was accused and sentenced absolutely illegally," her lawyer Sergiy Vlasenko told AFP on Monday.

The former Ukrainian interior minister, who is a close ally of jailed former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko, Yuriy Lutsenko, walked free from a prison in northern Ukraine after being pardoned by President Viktor Yanukovych earlier in the day.
