Football: Forlan on Uruguay bench for Spain clash

Copa America winners Uruguay will leave veteran striker Diego Forlan on the bench as they take on world champions Spain in Recife in their opening Confederations Cup Group B match on Sunday. Uruguay have lost ground since winning the Copa America in Argentina two years ago and face a struggle to qualify for the World Cup finals next year in Brazil. The two-time World Cup winners are currently only sixth in regional qualifying and the Confederations event is a mere distraction from the main aim of reaching the finals.

Football: Luis Suarez - Uruguay's firebrand saviour

Lambasted in Europe for his attitude on the pitch, Uruguay's controversial Liverpool forward Luis Suarez is in contrast seen as the saviour of his country. Fans of the Celeste warm to his goal sense and will to win, which will stand the South Americans in good stead during the Confederations Cup in Brazil. The 26-year-old, nicknamed "El Pistolero" or the gun-slinger, once again showed his effectiveness and class with a stunning strike in the 1-0 friendly win against France in Montevideo this week.

Football: Uruguay seek break from World Cup woes

Copa America winners Uruguay are eyeing the upcoming Confederations Cup in Brazil as a breather in their faltering attempts to qualify for the World Cup finals next year. A return trip to their northern neighbours in 2014 is by no means a certainty for the "Celeste", though, as they are having to fight hard to make up lost ground in South American qualification. As it stands, captain Diego Lugano's team would not even make the play-offs for a place in the finals.

Football: Napoli open to Dzeko, Cavani exchange

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis revealed on Tuesday that he would be willing to discuss a deal with Manchester City that would see strikers Edin Dzeko and Edinson Cavani move in opposite directions. "I have said to (sporting director Riccardo) Bigon: 'Go and see City to negotiate a bit for Dzeko and see what they are prepared to do for Cavani," De Laurentiis said during a public meeting in Naples.

Suarez accepts bite charge but queries longer ban

LONDON (Reuters) - Liverpool forward Luis Suarez has disputed the English FA's view that his punishment for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic at the weekend merits a longer punishment than the usual three-game ban. The FA said in a statement on Tuesday the Uruguayan international had accepted a charge of violent conduct but "has denied the FA's claim the standard punishment of three matches is clearly insufficient for this offence".

Football: Insigne snatches win for Napoli

Lorenzo Insigne came off the bench to score an injury-time winner as Napoli cemented second place in Serie A with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Cagliari on Sunday. With AC Milan away to Juventus later Sunday Napoli could ill afford to drop points as they look to secure the runner-up spot which offers direct qualification for next season's Champions League. However, for over 90 minutes, that looked to be the case as Cagliari stemmed the Napoli tide until Insigne's deflected shot from 25 metres handed his team all three points in the fourth minute of injury time.

Uruguay back "persecuted" Suarez in "punch" probe

MONTEVIDEO (Reuters) - The Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) have promised to staunchly defend Luis Suarez after FIFA launched a probe into allegations that he had punched a Chilean opponent during a South American World Cup qualifier last month. Argentine referee Nestor Pitana missed the incident during Chile's 2-0 victory in Santiago on March 26 when forward Suarez and Gonzalo Jara tussled in the penalty area at a corner.

Uruguay's Suarez banned for vital Venezuela game

By Rex Gowar BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - Striker Luis Suarez will miss South American champions Uruguay's crucial World Cup qualifier in Venezuela, the upstarts threatening to deny them a place in next year's finals in Brazil. Suarez, who has scored eight goals in the qualifying campaign, picked up a second booking during Tuesday's 2-0 loss to Chile in Santiago and is suspended for Uruguay's June 11 visit to Venezuela.

Forlan dropped as Uruguay reshuffle team to face Chile

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - Diego Forlan, Golden Ball winner as the 2010 World Cup's best player, has been dropped for Uruguay's critical qualifier away to Chile on Tuesday. Top Serie A scorer Edinson Cavani, a substitute in Uruguay's disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Paraguay on Friday, was named instead by coach Oscar Tabarez on Monday to partner Luis Suarez up front.
