Wales emerge victorious from stodgy Six Nations

By Mitch Phillips LONDON (Reuters) - This year's Six Nations opened with a spectacular weekend of action, lurched into tepid mediocrity amid foul weather but finished back on a high as Wales hammered England to retain the title amid a spine-tingling atmosphere in Cardiff. Wales were worthy champions after their record 30-3 demolition of grand-slam chasing England in the title decider, having bounced back from their opening defeat by Ireland with three successive away wins.

RugbyU: Lancaster vows England will learn from Wales wipeout

England coach Stuart Lancaster insisted his youthful side would learn from a record-breaking 30-3 loss to Wales which denied them both the Grand Slam and the Six Nations title. The Red Rose brigade's quest for a first clean sweep of their major European rivals since their World Cup-winning year of 2003 ended in dismal failure at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday, with Wales smashing England at the scrum before, as the match wore on, dominating at the breakdown and in the loose.

RugbyU: England's Grand Slam flops

England's record-breaking 30-3 loss to Wales at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on Saturday was the fifth time in their last six attempts they'd fallen at the final hurdle of a bid to complete a Grand Slam in either the Five or Six Nations. England's tally of 12 slams is a tournament record and one more than Wales, who've now tied the Anglo-Welsh record at 56 wins apiece with 12 draws.

RugbyU: Record-breaking Wales shatter England's Slam dream

Wales thrashed England by a record-breaking 30-3 in Cardiff on Saturday to retain the Six Nations title and deny the visitors the Grand Slam. As the tournament enjoyed a frenetic finale, Italy handed Ireland a 22-15 defeat in Rome while France recorded their first win with a 23-16 victory over Scotland in Paris. However, that triumph was not enough to prevent the rock-bottom French from landing the dreaded wooden spoon.

Wales thrashed England by a record-breaking 30-3 on Saturday to retain the Six Nations title, denying the visitors a Grand Slam while Italy handed Ireland a 22-15 defeat as the championship enjoyed a frenetic finale. Wales wing Alex Cuthbert's two second-half tries at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium proved decisive in a match they had to win by seven points to retain the title for the first time since 1979, provided they maintained their superior try-count.

RugbyU: England, Wales in title showdown, Italy stun Ireland

Grand Slam chasers England and defending champions Wales were eyeing Six Nations history on Saturday in a mouth-watering Millennium Stadium showdown as Italy shocked Ireland in Rome. A lacklustre tournament, blighted by the weather -- which won't be an issue in Cardiff after England agreed to the closure of the stadium's retractable roof -- is now set for a rousing finale.
