Football: Adkins is new coach at Reading

Former Southampton boss Nigel Adkins is to take over as manager at struggling Reading, the club confirmed on Tuesday. The Royals, who have been searching for a new head coach since they sacked Brian McDermott two weeks ago, have offered Adkins a contract until the summer of 2016. The 48-year-old had been out of work since surprisingly losing his job with the Saints in January, with his sacking coming after back-to-back promotions.

Reading look to future with Adkins appointment

By Toby Davis LONDON (Reuters) - Reading chose to put a steady hand on the tiller and look to the future rather than try their luck with a relegation quick-fix by unveiling former Southampton boss Nigel Adkins as their manager on Tuesday. In contrast to Adkins's former club, who replaced him with Argentine Mauricio Pochettino, Reading have opted for a man with Premier League experience who also knows his way around the lower divisions should they fail to beat the drop.

Soccer-Saints fans warn of protest at Adkins' sacking

LONDON, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Argentine Mauricio Pochettino inherits a Southampton squad in shock and a fan-base in revolt after replacing Nigel Adkins as manager of the Premier League club. Supporters of the south coast side say the former Espanyol boss can expect a fans' protest in his first match in charge, at home to Everton on Monday, as they express disgust at the sacking of a man who led Saints to back-to-back promotions.
