Venture investments, number of deals grew in the 4th quarter

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Funding for U.S. startups increased 20 per cent in the final three months of 2013 as venture capitalists poured more money into more deals, according to a report released Friday. Startup investments totalled $8.37 billion in the October-December period, up from $6.95 billion in the fourth quarter of 2012. There were 1,077 deals completed in the quarter, up from 1,050 a year earlier. Software companies received the most money, with biotech a distant second.

New Zealand MP to face charges in Dotcom donation row

A New Zealand MP allied to the government was Tuesday ordered to stand trial over fraud allegations involving donations from Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom, and will have to leave parliament if found guilty. John Banks, who resigned as a minister in October when initially committed by a District Court to stand trial over the allegations, had his bid for a judicial review of the ruling tossed out by a High Court judge. Banks is the sole MP of the ACT Party, which is in coalition with the National Party-led government.

Aiming at travellers, explorers, Pinterest lets users add location to pins

San Francisco-based Pinterest says that its "Place Pins" were designed to "combine all the beautiful imagery of a travel magazine with the utility of a map and put it all online so you can share it with friends." Pinterest said Tuesday it was launching a new "localized" version of the bulletin-board style social media site for French users. "French has been available as a language setting on Pinterest since last year, but language is just one important piece of culture," Pinterest said in a blog post announcing the move. "That's why we're launching a new localized version of Pinterest, created especially for people in France." French "pinners" will see more local content and links to more French domains and pins with descriptions in French.

Shutterfly sues to shut down Kodak photo app

(Reuters) - Photo service Shutterfly Inc has sued to shut down an Eastman Kodak Co app that lets users purchase photo albums made from pictures stored on Facebook Inc's social media network, according to court documents. Shutterfly bought the Kodak Gallery online photo business for $23.8 million (15.6 million pounds) last year, and as part of the deal Kodak agreed not to set up a duplicate business, according to court documents.
