RugbyU: Munster, Clermont advance to European Cup semis

Munster outplayed four-time champions Toulouse and Clermont snuck past Leicester to move into the European Cup semi-finals on Saturday. The Irish province, themselves former two-time title holders of the continent's elite club tournament in 2006 and 2008, routed Toulouse 47-23 and will be joined in the last four by Clermont, whose nail-biting 22-16 win over Leicester was their 75th successive home victory.

RugbyU: Brive hand leaders Clermont reality check

French Top 14 leaders Clermont, who stunned European champions Toulon last week, slumped to a 26-24 loss at Brive on Friday in a bruising game which saw three yellow cards. Despite the defeat, Clermont stay top of the table with a four-point lead over Toulon after grabbing the consolation of a losing bonus point. Brive full-back Gaetan Germain finished with a personal haul of 21 points to cement his place as the championship's leading points scorer.

Biarritz's imminent relegation from the French Top 14 moved a step closer Friday as Oyonnax boosted their own survival hopes with a 24-22 win in the Basque Country. Biarritz, French champions as recently as 2006 and European Cup finalists in 2010, knew before kick off that even if they won every one of their remaining games with an attacking bonus point, they would probably still go down. As it was, they lost to the team directly above them and who hadn't won an away match all season before visiting the Aguilera.

RugbyU: Euro limbo continues with new payment delay

European Cup rugby chiefs decided Wednesday to once again delay a decision regarding the release of tournament fees to competing clubs amid ongoing uncertainty over the future of the event. The European Rugby Cup (ERC) board initially deferred a decision on the late payments in a Dublin meeting on February 5, and followed suit again when they reconvened in London on Wednesday. Another board meeting has been set for March 11 -- but a shareholders' meeting that could release the payments has been called for March 10.

RugbyU: Munster-Toulouse to open European Cup quarters

Munster will host Toulouse in the opening European Cup quarter final on April 5, organisers European Cup Rugby said Monday. Three of the four quarter-finals will be played on the Saturday with Toulon hosting Leinster in the final last eight encounter a day later.
