Serbia to meet Canada on clay in Davis Cup semi-final

Serbia will play Canada in the Davis Cup World Group semi-finals in September on clay, the Serbian national tennis federation said Monday. "Serbia chose to meet the Canadian team at Belgrade's Kombank Arena and this match will be played on clay," from September 13 to 15, the federation said in a statement. The Serbian team, led by world number one Novak Djokovic, won the 2010 Davis Cup, while Canada until the 2013 season had never won a match in the World Group since it was founded in 1981.

Serbia's economy contracts 1.7% in 2012

Serbia's economy contracted by 1.7 percent in 2012, slightly better than the forecast drop of 2.0 percent, Serbian statistics bureau said Friday. Serb children hurt by blast in flashpoint Kosovo town

MITROVICA, Kosovo, Feb 4 (Reuters) - Two Serb children were wounded on Monday when what appeared to be a hand grenade was thrown at their home in the ethnically divided flashpoint town of Mitrovica. The children, a boy aged three and a girl aged nine, were hit by shrapnel in the head and back, doctors at a Mitrovica hospital said. The attack followed at least two explosions on the Serb side of the town on Sunday, apparently targeting Serbs working for the Kosovo authorities. No one was hurt in those blasts.

Albanians protest after Serbia takes down memorial

PRESEVO, Serbia, Jan 21 (Reuters) - Thousands of ethnic Albanians protested in Serbia on Monday against the removal of a memorial to fallen guerrilla fighters and dozens of Serb graves in neighbouring Kosovo were damaged in apparent retaliation. The monument in the town of Presevo was removed on Sunday by 200 masked Serbian police officers backed by armoured personnel carriers. It bore the names of 27 ethnic Albanian guerrillas killed during a 2000 insurgency in the Presevo Valley, a spillover from the 1999 war in Kosovo, Serbia's former province.
