Peralta hat-trick guides Mexico to World Cup

By Greg Stutchbury WELLINGTON (Reuters) - Oribe Peralta scored a first half hat-trick as Mexico beat New Zealand 4-2 in the second leg of their intercontinental playoff on Wednesday to earn a place at the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil. The CONCACAF heavyweights, who were fortunate to sneak into the playoff, won the two-legged tie 9-3 on aggregate after they had all but sealed qualification with a 5-1 victory over the Oceania champions at the Azteca Stadium last week.

Football: Peralta hat-trick takes Mexico to World Cup

An Oribe Peralta hat-trick fired Mexico into their sixth successive World Cup on Wednesday, as El Tri downed New Zealand 4-2 to end a roller-coaster qualification campaign on a high. Peralta, who also scored two when Mexico trounced the All Whites 5-1 at home in last week's first leg, effectively killed off the return leg before the break, with Carlos Pena making the aggregate score 9-3 at the death. Victory in the intercontinental play-off means Mexico have now reached 15 of the last 20 World Cups, making them one of the most consistent teams in international football.

Football: Ecuador deny Honduras with late Valencia goal

World Cup qualifiers Ecuador needed a late equalizer from Enner Valencia to snatch a 2-2 draw with Honduras on Tuesday. Valencia notched his first international goal in the 89th minute to deny Honduras victory after a friendly which saw both sides reduced to 10-men. Valencia had only entered the fray as a 73rd minute substitute in the match in Houston. His goal came after he blocked an attempted Honduras clearance and lashed in a shot from outside the area. Earlier, Ecuador striker Jaime Ayovi had put the South Americans 1-0 up in the 15th minute.
