Qualification just the start of test for Klinsmann's U.S

By Simon Evans COLUMBUS, Ohio (Reuters) - The United States celebrated qualification for the World Cup finals with a 2-0 victory over Mexico on Tuesday but the true test of Juergen Klinsmann's team will not come until Brazil itself. As champagne flowed and official tee-shirts declaring ‘Qualified' were snapped up by fans partying around Crew Stadium, there was a quiet word of caution from one of the team's hardened realists.

Mexican newspapers had little love for their national football team on Wednesday as "El Tri" faced the humiliating prospect of missing the World Cup finals for the first time in 24 years. Mexico have featured in 14 of the 19 previous World Cups and have not missed a tournament since being banned from the 1990 finals in Italy. However, after losing 2-0 to the United States in Columbus, Ohio, on Tuesday they sit in fifth place in the six-team CONCACAF regional group.

Columbus, Ohio, Sep 11 (EFE).- The United States defeated Mexico 2-0 here on the strength of goals from Eddie Johnson and Landon Donovan to clinch a berth in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. After a scoreless first half, the United States got the first goal in the 49th minute of Tuesday night's game when Johnson headed in a corner kick off the foot of Donovan. The second came a half-hour later, when a pass from Mikkel Diskerud traveled along the goal line past Mexican goalkeeper Jose de Jesus Corona and found Donovan, who booted it home from point-blank range.

The USA and Costa Rica punched their tickets to the World Cup with a victory and a draw in CONCACAF regional qualifying on Tuesday.
