Tigres beat America to take Clausura 2013 lead

Mexico City, May 5 (EFE).- Tigres beat America on the latter's home turf 2-0 to regain the lead in Mexico's Clausura 2013 soccer tourney, which this weekend finished up its regular season and goes into the playoff phase where the top eight teams will vie for the title. Brazilian Danilinho scored in the 47th minute and Argentina's Lucas Lobos found the net in the 58th minute in Saturday's victory, giving Tigres the win, a total of 35 points and undisputed leadership in the tourney.

America, Tigres, Atlas lead Liga MX

Mexico City, Apr 29 (EFE).- America, Tigres and Atlas are clustered together atop the Liga MX 16 weeks into the Clausura season, while Queretaro - despite winning its weekend match - has been relegated. America won 4-2 on the road against Pachuca thanks to a hat trick by Christian Benitez, Tigres lost 1-0 to Monterrey and Atlas battled to a 1-1 draw with Puebla. The weekend's results left the three top clubs with 32 points each, though America has an advantage on goal differential.

Pumas move up to 5th as Tigres extend unbeaten streak to 13

Mexico City, Apr 8 (EFE).- The UNAM Pumas moved up to fifth place in the Liga MX with a 2-1 road win over Pachuca, while league-leading Tigres played to a scoreless tie with Leon to remain unbeaten 13 weeks into the season. Pumas and Pachuca each have 20 points, but the UNAM squad has the better goal differential. Tigres, with 29 points, are only a win or a tie away from matching the Liga MX record of 14 consecutive matches without a loss, set by Chivas in 2001. Second-place Atlas tied Morelia 0-0 and No. 4 Santos Laguna's duel with Tijuana also ended with no goals.

Cruz Azul needs playoff berth to salvage season, Gimenez says

Mexico City, Apr 2 (EFE).- Cruz Azul midfielder Christian Gimenez said his team must do more than beat America in this week's Copa MX semifinal if it wants to salvage what has been a disappointing Clausura season. Currently 13th overall in Liga MX, Cruz Azul is three points out of a playoff spot.

Atlas beats Cruz Azul, takes first place in Mexican soccer

Mexico City, Mar 31 (EFE).- Atlas beat Cruz Azul 2-1 to become the new leaders in the Clausura 2013 Mexican soccer tourney at the beginning of the 12th week of the championship. Luis Ramos scored in the 39th minute of Saturday's match and Vicente Matias Vuosso added a goal in the 55th minute for the visitors, while Israel Castro found the net for the home squad, who remain out of the qualifying zone, in the 51st minute. The first period was rather lackluster except for the fact that Ramos managed to knock a header in.

Cruz Azul, America to face off in Copa Mx semis

Mexico City, Mar 13 (EFE).- Cruz Azul beat Jaguares de Chiapas 1-0 to set up a Copa Mx semifinal clash with America, which advanced after topping second division club Estudiantes in a penalty shootout. The Jaguares were not intimidated by the atmosphere at Mexico City's Estadio Azul and they generated a number of chances even as their defense stymied the home side. Cruz Azul picked up the pace in the second half and had an opportunity to score in the 60th minute, but Colombian striker Teofilo Gutierrez's shot went astray.

Atlas, Atlante and Chiapas book spots in Copa MX quarterfinals

Mexico City, Mar 7 (EFE).- Atlas, currently in second place in Mexico's Liga MX Clausura, booked a place in the quarterfinals of the Copa MX tournament with a 3-1 win over Cruz Azul in its sixth and final match of the group phase, while Atlante and Jaguares de Chiapas also qualified for the knockout stage with victories. Pachuca, Puebla and Cruz Azul, meanwhile, advanced Wednesday to the last eight despite losses in their final-round matches.

Argentina's Villa scores twice, leading Tigres to win over Cruz Azul

Mexico City, Feb 24 (EFE).- Argentine Emanuel Villa scored a pair of goals on the weekend to lead the Tigres to a 2-1 away victory over Cruz Azul in the eighth week of the Mexican Clausura soccer tourney. Villa scored in the 7th and 26th minutes and is now the leading goalmaker for the Tigres, who are in first place. The first tally came on a free kick by Lucas Lobos that rebounded and Villa just needed to tap it to beat the Cruz Azul goalie. The second came when Damian Alvarez fired but missed, with Villa knocking in the rebound with his right foot.

America crushes Necaxa 3-1 in Copa MX action

Mexico City, Feb 20 (EFE).- America crushed Necaxa 3-1, while the Culiacan Dorados beat Pachuca 5-2 in the fourth round of the Copa MX, a tournament that features 11 Mexican First-Division teams and 13 Second-Division teams. America scored on goals by Ventura Alvarado, Antonio Lopez and Gil Cordero, overcoming the initial lead by Necaxa in the match played Tuesday night at Mexico City's Azteca Stadium. The Dorados, the defending Copa MX champions, got goals from four different players and benefited from a self-goal by Aldair Meza in their decisive win over Pachuca.

Soccer-Villa puts two past former club Cruz Azul for Tigres win

MEXICO CITY, Feb 24 (Reuters) - Argentine goal predator Emanuel Villa profited from two rebounds to score twice and give Mexican league leaders UANL Tigres a 2-1 win at Cruz Azul. Villa, who spent three season at Cruz Azul, struck first in the seventh minute of Saturday's match at the Estadio Azul when he tapped the ball home after Brazilian Juninho's free kick came back off the bar.
