China orders military chiefs to serve stints as junior soldiers

By Megha Rajagopalan BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered his top brass to spend two weeks as junior soldiers every few years as a way of boosting military morale - but sceptics doubt the move will do much more than polish his own credentials as commander in chief.

China's Xi takes a taxi: the news story that rocked the web

China on Thursday vehemently denied media reports of a seemingly banal tale that has spread like wildfire on the web -- that President Xi Jinping took a taxi in Beijing. According to a report by the Hong Kong newspaper Takungpao on Thursday, Xi, accompanied by another man, took a taxi on March 1 across Beijing to his hotel -- without any official escort. This is big news in China where members of the ruling Communist party are perceived as disconnected to daily life, surrounded by security and extremely unlikely to make such a banal journey.

Door to outside world will never close: Xi

China will never close its door to the outside world, President Xi Jinping said Monday at the on-going Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference 2013. China will stay committed to opening-up, an important driving force for the country's development, Xi told representatives of about 30 well-known enterprises from China and overseas at a round-table dialogue at the forum. "China will expand, deepen and widen its open economy." He also called on foreign countries to be more open to Chinese investors.

In a speech to a regional business forum in southern China on Sunday, Xi said Beijing will play a constructive role in reducing tensions over regional hotspots. Xi did not offer any concrete plans for how to deal with neighbor North Korea, which has elevated regional tensions through war-like rhetoric and missile deployments in recent weeks.

China's Xi says 'ultra-high speed' growth probably over

China's President Xi Jinping said Monday the days of "ultra-high speed" growth in the world's second-largest economy -- which many hope can spur a global recovery -- are probably over. "I don't think we will be able to sustain an ultra-high speed of economic growth and it is not what we want either," Xi told about two dozen foreign business figures on the southern island of Hainan. "Still it is possible for us to sustain a relatively high speed of economic growth," he added. "The Chinese economy is in good shape."
