Solid Nadal sees off Fognini to reach last 16

By Julien Pretot PARIS (Reuters) - Seven-times champion Rafael Nadal picked up some momentum at the French Open on Saturday by holding off a brave but sporadic challenge from Fabio Fognini 7-6(5) 6-4 6-4 to book his place in the fourth round. Third seed Nadal suffered the occasional wobble but, for the first time this year, did not drop a set as he set up a meeting with Japanese 13th seed Kei Nishikori on his 27th birthday on Monday.

Tennis: Djokovic scrambles into third round

Novak Djokovic passed a tough first test at Indian Wells on Sunday to maintain his perfect record for the season and reach the third round of the year's first Masters tournament. The world No. 1 defeated 36th-ranked Fabio Fognini 6-0, 5-7, 6-2. But he was kicking himself for letting control of the match slip away in the second set, when he went up an early break only for Fognini to get back on serve with a break of his own in the seventh game.

Tennis: Djokovic survives Fognini test

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic passed a tough first test at the Indian Wells Masters on Sunday, booking a third-round berth with a 6-0, 5-7, 6-2 victory over Italy's Fabio Fognini. Djokovic improved to 14-0 in 2013, an unbeaten run that has included a fourth Australian Open title and a victory in Dubai. However his victory over 36th-ranked Fognini was far from the routine win the quick first set promised. The Italian saved a match point in the 10th game of the second set, then broke Djokovic a second time to force the third frame.
