Evidence of torture by regime in Syria's Raqa: HRW

Documents and torture equipment found in Syrian security buildings in rebel-held Raqa show detainees were tortured when President Bashar al-Assad's regime held sway over the city, Human Rights Watch said on Friday. A team of researchers working for HRW toured Raqa in northern Syria in April, a month after the city fell into rebel hands, and found the incriminating evidence, the New York-based watchdog said in a statement.

HRW accuses Myanmar of 'ethnic cleansing'

Myanmar has waged "a campaign of ethnic cleansing" against Rohingya Muslims, a top rights watchdog said Monday, citing evidence of mass graves and forced displacement affecting tens of thousands. The Rohingya, who are denied citizenship by the country also known as Burma, have faced crimes against humanity including murder, persecution, deportation and forced transfer, New York-based Human Rights Watch said.

Myanmar police failed to stop killing, arson: HRW

Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Monday urged Myanmar to investigate the failure of police to stop a recent wave of Buddhist-Muslim killing and arson attacks. The New York-based rights watchdog released satellite images which it said showed more than 800 buildings were totally destroyed in the central town of Meiktila, leaving several charred areas where homes and properties once stood.

Syria 'expanding' cluster munitions use: HRW

Syria's regime are expanding its use of cluster munitions in its conflict with rebel forces, causing "mounting civilian causalities," Human Rights Watch warned on Saturday. "Syria is expanding its relentless use of cluster munitions, a banned weapon, and civilians are paying the price with their lives and limbs," Steve Goose, director of HRW's arms division, said in a statement.

HRW, Amnesty urge Saudis to halt execution of 7 men

Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International urged Saudi authorities to halt Tuesday's scheduled executions of seven young men condemned for crimes committed when they were minors. The two rights groups said in separate statements that the seven Saudi men were convicted of armed robbery, a crime punishable by death in the kingdom which applies a strict interpretation of Islamic sharia law. "All seven men were between 16 and 20 when authorities arrested them in 2006 for allegedly committing a robbery in 2005," Human Rights Watch said.

HRW fears 'mockery of justice' in UAE Islamists trial

Human Rights Watch raised fears Sunday of a "mockery of justice" as it urged UAE authorities to ensure a fair trial for 94 Islamists accused of plotting against the Gulf state, on the eve of the hearing. "It appears that UAE authorities will drag scores of citizens through a shamelessly unfair judicial process that makes a mockery of justice," said HRW's Middle East director Sarah Leah Whitson in a statement.

Sudan opposition members held with no charge: HRW

Sudan should charge or release six members of opposition political parties which held talks last month with rebel groups on a charter for toppling the government, Human Rights Watch said on Tuesday. A coalition of large and small Sudanese opposition parties, as well as community activists, agreed to the New Dawn charter in Kampala, Uganda with insurgents from Sudan's Darfur, South Kordofan and Blue Nile areas. The pact calls for regime change using both armed and peaceful means.

HRW seeks independent probe into Yemen 'massacre'

Human Rights Watch on Tuesday urged Yemen to launch an independent probe into the "massacre" of 45 protesters during the 2011 uprising against ousted autocratic president Ali Abdullah Saleh. The New York-based watchdog said an earlier investigation ordered by Saleh into the killings was flawed, calling for a new probe that is "independent, impartial and meets international standards." "Several senior former and current government officials appear to have played a role in the massacre but have not been charged," it said in a 69-page report entitled "Unpunished Massacre".
