Descendants set off in memory of Cape Verde's Jewish past

A handful of descendants of Cape Verde's small but influential Jewish community are traveling to the West African archipelago to honor the memory of their ancestors and their unique heritage. Next Thursday, they will re-dedicate the long-neglected Jewish burial plot within the Varzea municipal cemetery in the islands' capital Praia that has been restored with financial help from Morocco's King Mohammed VI.

Soccer-Cape Verde players speak up for Portuguese language

LISBON, Jan 30 (Reuters) - Cape Verde's soccer team say they are doing their bit to promote the Portuguese language by refusing to give interviews in any other tongue at the African Nations Cup. "One of the reasons why Portuguese is not well projected internationally is that we enjoy being polite to foreigners and speak to them in their languages," team spokesman Gerson de Matos told Portuguese daily a Bola on Wednesday.
