Penguins are star attraction at Guatemala City zoo

Guatemala City, May 13 (EFE).- Twelve Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldt), newly arrived from a conservation park in France, have become the star attractions for Guatemalans and foreigners at Guatemala City's La Aurora Zoo. The flightless aquatic birds were donated by France's Beauval ZooParc under a European threatened species program, after Guatemala agreed to try and breed them and deliver the broods to South America.

Chile's Humboldt penguins under threat of extinction

Several dozen Humboldt penguins sun themselves along the coast of an islet in central Chile where the majestic birds coming here to nest once numbered in the thousands. Humboldt penguins -- which nest only in parts of Chile and Peru -- over the years have become decimated by human encroachment, rat infestations and unforgiving weather currents carried by unusually warm El Nino ocean temperatures, naturalists said. The Pajaro Nino islet, spread across a narrow channel of water from the popular resort area of Algarrobo, once drew about 2,000 of the birds during nesting season.

Sad end for 'Happy Feet Jr.' in New Zealand

A penguin dubbed Happy Feet junior that washed up in New Zealand 2,000 kilometres (1,250 miles) from his home has died despite intensive efforts to save him, Wellington Zoo said Friday. A veterinary team spent five days caring for the bird, a juvenile royal penguin which had drifted far from a breeding colony in sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island after spending an estimated 12 months at sea. But the zoo's chief vet Lisa Argilla said the penguin died overnight as malnutrition and kidney failure took their toll.

A penguin dubbed Happy Feet junior has been found stranded 2,000 kilometres (1,250 miles) from home in New Zealand, reviving memories of another wayward penguin that washed up in 2011. The latest wandering stray was discovered close to death on the coast south of Wellington over the weekend and taken to the capital's zoo suffering from malnutrition and kidney failure.

UPDATE 1-Adelie penguins: cool, efficient killing machines

(Adds information in eleventh paragraph) By Ruairidh Villar TOKYO, Jan 24 (Reuters) - Fish of the Antarctic, be very afraid. There's an unlikely stealth predator on the loose - Adelie penguins. Forget their ungainly waddling on land or comical bobbing at the ocean's surface. As soon as these penguins dive into the icy Antarctic ocean, they become calculating, efficient killing machines, say Japanese researchers.
