Hyundai Motor ready to make splash in global eco-friendly car market

SEOUL, April 18 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor Co. is gearing up to seize a chunk of the steadily growing eco-friendly vehicle market that by 2020 is expected to have grown a stellar 360 percent. The carmaker, the flagship of the world's fifth-largest automotive conglomerate Hyundai Motor Group, on Thursday detailed to the media its plans for fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) at a showing for a version of the Tucson that the company says is the only mass-produced FCEV in the world to date.

Outlining its domestic green car road map for the Tuscon fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) to local media, Hyundai said it will start selling the cars in June, with total delivery expected to hit 40 within the year. Initial sales will be made to regional governments.

Hyundai Motor kicks off grassland development project in China

SEOUL, April 16 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's No. 1 carmaker, said Wednesday that it will kick off a massive grassland development project in China as part of its effort to preserve the environment and reduce the frequency of sand storms that periodically blow into South Korea. The company, which sold 440,150 vehicles in China in the first quarter of this year, said the "Hyundai Green Zone" calls for the creation of pastures in an area covering 40 million square meters. The project also envisages hiring people in the region to help the local economy.

Hyundai Motor launches i30 D-Spec in home market

SEOUL, April 15 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's largest carmaker, said Tuesday it has launched a more powerful version of its popular i30 hatchback in its home market. The new model called the D-Spec replaces the conventional 1.6-liter gasoline direct injection (GDi) with a stronger 2-liter Nu motor, which is good for 172 horsepower and 21 kilogram-force meter of torque. The stronger GDi engine has 23 percent more horsepower and 24 percent more twist than the regular version of the compact family car.

Hyundai Motor Group car sales in China jump 14 pct in March

SEOUL, April 15 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor Group, the world's fifth-largest automotive conglomerate, said Tuesday its sales in China jumped 14 percent on-year in March, fueled by strong demand for its popular models. The conglomerate said combined sales of cars made by its flagships Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp. in the neighboring country stood at 147,510 units last month, up from 129,355 a year earlier.

Union workers refute low evaluation of Hyundai cars

ULSAN, April 10 (Yonhap) -- The union of Hyundai Motor Co. on Thursday refuted a poor evaluation of Hyundai cars by a U.S. market researcher, saying what it called the biased study should not be used by management to exert pressure on the workers. In a vehicle dependability study (VDS) by J.D. Power, released in February, Hyundai Motor cars ranked 27th among 31 brands.

Hyundai, Kia overseas production hits record high in Q1

SEOUL, April 8 (Yonhap) -- Overseas production by Hyundai Motor Co. and its sister brand Kia Motors Corp. in the first quarter hit a record 1,093,881 units, corporate data showed Tuesday. The total represents a 6.1 percent increase from 1,031,316 vehicles in the same cited period last year and the highest reached in a three-month period, figures provided by the two automakers showed. Foreign production of Hyundai cars rose 4 percent on-year to 754,222 units, while numbers for Kia shot up 10.9 percent to 339,659 vehicles.
