Cameron spells out British stance on Tibet

Britain does not support a Tibetan state independent of China, Prime Minister David Cameron said on Wednesday amid reports of Chinese anger at his meeting with the Dalai Lama last year. Cameron told parliament that Britain respected China's sovereignty and ministers recognised Tibet as part of China. Britain officials deny that Chinese anger at the meeting between Cameron and the Tibetan spiritual leader in May 2012 could scupper the prime minister's plans to visit China by the end of this year.

Tibetan mother immolates herself

Beijing, Apr 17 (EFE).- A young mother died after setting herself on fire to protest Chinese rule over her homeland, prompting thousands of people to gather near her home and the monastery where the self-immolation occurred. Chugtso, 20, set herself ablaze Tuesday near Dzamthang county's Jonang monastery, in Sichuan province, bringing to 116 the number of people who have killed themselves in this fashion since 2009, Radio Free Asia said.

China 'bans' Kraftwerk from festival over Tibet show

China has forbidden German electronic band Kraftwerk from performing at a music festival, more than a decade after they appeared on the bill of a Free Tibet concert, an industry source said Thursday. Modern Sky records, a Chinese music company, applied to the Ministry of Culture for permission for the band to play at the annual Strawberry Festival in Beijing next month. But a source at the firm, asking for anonymity for fear of reprisals, said: "Kraftwerk were not allowed to play... because they participated in a Free Tibet concert.

Two Tibetans set selves alight in China: reports

Two Tibetans including a mother of four have set themselves on fire in China in two days, rights groups and media reports said Monday, the latest in a series of such protests against Beijing's rule. A 33-year-old Tibetan named Kal Kyi burned herself to death in protest against Chinese authorities in southwestern China's Sichuan province on Sunday, Radio Free Asia reported, adding she had four children. The immolation occurred in Aba, a Tibetan-populated county where there have been a number of similar protests since 2009, according to India-based Tibetan website phayul.com

A Tibetan woman burned herself to death, leading authorities in China to detain her husband, rights groups and media reports said Tuesday, in the latest such protest against Beijing's rule. Around 110 Tibetans have now set themselves on fire since 2009. Kunchok Wangmo, in her early 30s, set herself on fire in southwestern Sichuan province's Aba prefecture, said the US-based International Campaign for Tibet (ICT) and UK-based Free Tibet, which spelled her name Kunchoek.

Tibetan self-immolates in China: rights groups

A Tibetan Buddhist monk has died after setting himself ablaze in China, Western rights groups said, the latest in a string of self-immolations in protest against Chinese rule. US-based Radio Free Asia said Lobsang Thokmey torched himself at Kirti monastery on Saturday to mark a 2008 security crackdown by Chinese authorities in the country's Tibetan areas. He emerged burning from his room at the monastery carrying a Tibetan Buddhist prayer flag, RFA said, and died before he arrived at hospital.

Nepal police arrest Tibetans on anniversary of uprising

Nepalese police arrested 18 people in Kathmandu on suspicion of "anti-China activities" on Sunday, the anniversary of the 1959 rebellion against China's rule in Tibet. "Some of the people we arrested were Tibetan but we have not interrogated all of them yet," police spokesman Uttam Subedi told AFP, saying all but three had been released on the same day. Nepal, home to around 20,000 Tibetans, is under intense pressure from Beijing over the exiles, and has repeatedly said it will not tolerate what it calls "anti-China activities".
