S Korea-adoption convention

SEOUL, May 24 (Yonhap) -- South Korea officially joined an international treaty on adoption to provide protection for children, the health ministry said Friday. According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, South Korea became a member state of the Hague Convention on the Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption, as Health Minister Jin Young signed the deal on Friday.

March 1 (Reuters) - Texas authorities ruled the death of a Russian boy adopted by a U.S. couple as accidental on Friday, but declined to rule out criminal charges as a probe continued into a case that has intensified a dispute over international adoptions, the Odessa American newspaper reported. The Jan. 21 death of Max Shatto, 3, had sparked criminal and child welfare investigations in Texas, probes by authorities in Russia, and calls from Russian lawmakers for his 2-year-old brother to be returned to Russia.
