Spain's population falls as immigrants flee crisis

By Fiona Ortiz MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's official population fell last year for the first time since records began as immigrants fled a five-year on-and-off recession that has sent unemployment soaring. The number of residents fell by 206,000 to 47.1 million, the National Statistics Institute said on Monday, a figure entirely accounted for by the fall in the number of registered foreign residents.

Declan Kidney was sacked as Ireland coach on Tuesday the Irish Rugby Football Union announced. The 53-year-old -- who guided Ireland to the 2009 Six Nations Grand Slam and won the world coach of the year award as a result -- had been widely expected not to have his contract renewed at the end of June after a disappointing Six Nations. Four migrant boats stopped off Spanish coast

Spanish and Moroccan rescuers on Tuesday intercepted four dinghys packed with 23 illegal immigrants trying to cross the Strait of Gibraltar and make landfall on Spain's southern shore. Spain's maritime service said rescuers had picked up 12 migrants who were travelling on two boats while Morocco had intercepted 11 people who were on another two vessels. The migrants were given blankets and transported to the port of Tarifa in the Spanish province of Cadiz which is located across the Strait of Gibraltar facing Morocco.

Northern Ireland v Russia postponed for second time

LONDON (Reuters) - Northern Ireland's World Cup qualifying Group F match with Russia was postponed for a second time on Saturday because of snow and ice in Belfast. The game was originally scheduled for Friday but was put back a day before being called off again. "The referee has just called the match off as ice is forming on the pitch. There is no need for fans to come to Windsor Park to help," the Irish FA said on Twitter. There was no word on when the game would be rearranged.

Irish police union pulls of out new public sector talks

DUBLIN, Jan 25 (Reuters) - One of the main trade union's representing Ireland's police service on Friday pulled out of talks aimed at extending a key public sector pay agreement after failing to reach a deal to cut its pay bill. Ireland's government started a new round of talks with unions this month to shrink a bloated pay bill by overhauling the so-called Croke Park agreement that has helped Dublin avoid the mass strikes seen in other struggling euro zone countries.
