One dead in gunfight between Egypt PM guards, 'thugs'

A passerby who was wounded in a firefight between Egyptian Prime Minister Hisham Qandil's bodyguards and a group of "thugs" died of his injuries on Monday, a security official said. The man, a street vendor, was shot in the neck on Sunday night when a group of people driving a pick up traded fire with Qandil's bodyguards who were travelling in a convoy with him. Qandil was not hurt. His bodyguards opened fire at the truck carrying five people that had cut into Qandil's convoy as it crossed Cairo's October 6 bridge across the Nile.

Freed Israeli kidnap victim returns home from Egypt's Sinai

An Israeli man kidnapped by armed Bedouin in Egypt's Sinai peninsula last week has arrived home, telling reporters that he and his Norwegian companion had been threatened with death. "They set a trap for us with two jeeps that stopped us," Israeli Arab Amir Omar Hassan told reporters on his arrival late Tuesday at Ben Gurion airport. "About 10 armed men got out and threw us in the back of the jeeps," he said in remarks broadcast Wednesday by Israeli radio stations. "They said shut up, you're going to die now."
