Egypt Bedouin kidnap Israeli, Belgian tourists: police

Armed Bedouin tribesmen in Egypt's Sinai abducted two tourists, an Israeli man and a Belgian woman, on Friday as they were travelling between two beach resorts, police officials said. The gunmen intercepted the tourists' car and forced them into their truck, the officials said. The tourists had been travelling between the southern resort of Taba, on the border with Israel, and Dahab.

Protester killed in fresh Cairo clashes: medics

A protester was shot dead on Saturday in fresh clashes with the police in central Cairo, an AFP reporter and medics said. An AFP correspondent saw the protester being brought to a mosque in Tahrir Square with gunshot wounds, with medics confirming he was dead. The head of Egypt's emergency services, Mohammed Sultan, said separately that a protester "suffocated" after inhaling tear gas, and "died in the ambulance on his way to hospital." It was unclear if it was the same victim.

"The canal is far away of any political situation the country is facing and is safe and open to all ships passing through it," Suez Canal spokesman Tarek Hassanein told MENA. "Attempts by some citizens to stop car ferries from crossing ... in the city of Port Said did not affect navigation in the canal," he added.

About 2,000 protesters also blocked car ferries from crossing the canal, following a court's confirmation of death sentences on 21 local soccer fans.

Policeman killed in Egypt clashes as prisoners moved

A policeman was killed Sunday and an army officer was wounded in Egypt's city of Port Said, the army said, after the authorities decided to move prisoners awaiting a verdict over alleged involvement in a deadly football riot. The military said the policeman died and the military officer was hit in the leg when they were struck by gunshots fired by unknown assailants outside the headquarters of the Port Said governorate in northeast Egypt. A health ministry bulletin earlier said 253 people were injured in the clashes.

18 Dead in Egypt after balloon catches fire

Cairo, Feb 26 (EFE).- At least 18 people died Tuesday and another three were injured when a balloon packed with tourists caught fire in the southern city of Luxor, Egypt's health ministry told Efe. The head of the ministry's office in Luxor, Mohammed Rabia, said the fatalities included one Egyptian and 17 foreigners including tourists from Britain, France, China and Japan. Rabia said there were no Spaniards or Latin Americans among the victims.
