Dolphins are born free, but everywhere in pools

Twenty thousand Turks so far have signed an online petition launched by writer Buket Uzuner, who also defines herself as a “friend of dolphins,” to ensure that authorities do not allow the Kas Dolphinarium in Antalya to reopen. Dolphins are intelligent creatures and although they seem to enjoy human company, it is a known fact that they don't thrive in captivity. They suffer tremendously, and they don't survive more than a couple of years.

Japan whaling haul at 'record low'

The haul from Japan's whaling fleet in the Southern Ocean was a "record low" this year, a government minister said Friday, blaming "unforgivable sabotage" by activists. The hunt netted just 103 Antarctic minke whales, less than half its tally last year and no fin whales, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said, adding it was the lowest total since "research whaling" began in 1987.

Japan's whale 'research' is flashpoint in global dispute

The Institute of Cetacean Research can be found in a nondescript white-brick office building in Tokyo's port district. Down a hallway and through an unmarked door is a small lobby with a model ship, a poster showing various whale species, and a sign that reads "Keep Out". Japan says the research that goes on behind the locked security door is crucial for studying whale populations, but critics slam the practice as a loophole to get around an international ban on commercial whaling.

Scientists use new technology to record whale songs in Antarctica

Sydney, Mar 27 (EFE).- Scientists have managed to capture up to 26,545 blue whale songs in the Antarctic in a study for which they used - for the first time - new acoustical detection and tracking techniques to locate and observe the huge cetaceans. The work was carried out by researchers from Germany, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, the United States, France, Norway, the United Kingdom, South Africa and New Zealand, all of whom are participating in the ongoing Antarctic Blue Whale Project to study the world's largest animal.

World's biggest creature tracked by its song

An Australian-led group of scientists has for the first time tracked down and tagged Antarctic blue whales by using acoustic technology to follow its songs, the government said Wednesday. The blue whale, the largest animal on the planet, is rarely spotted in the Southern Ocean but a group of intrepid researchers were able to locate and tag some of the mammals after picking up on their deep and complex vocals.

Seven pilot whales die in mass stranding on S.Africa beach

Nineteen pilot whales washed up on a Cape Town beach in South Africa Sunday and seven of them died, sea rescue officials said, prompting a frenzy to save the remaining giant mammals. "We don't know what might have caused the mass whale stranding, unfortunately seven have died," said Craig Lambinon, the spokesman for the National Sea Rescue Institute. He said efforts were under way to release the surviving whales back into the sea and to dispose of the seven carcasses.

Mass whale strandings not a family affair: study

Whales that beach themselves in large groups are not all members of the same family, a study has found, undermining long-held assumptions about the cause of mass strandings. An international team of scientists studied 12 mass strandings in Australia and New Zealand to examine the theory that healthy whales beach themselves while trying to help sick or disorientated family members who have run aground. After examining the DNA of 490 whales they concluded the so-called "caregiving model" did not stand up, as most of the whales were not related.

Beached whale in Spain dies from ingesting plastic waste

A 4.5 tonne sperm whale that washed ashore in southern Spain died from ingesting large amounts of plastic sheets used in greenhouses on farms in the region, a scientist said Thursday. The whale, which came ashore last year on a beach in Andalusia, had over 17 kilogrammes (37 pounds) of garbage blocking its stomach, including some 30 square metres (36 square yards) of plastic canvas, said Renaud de Stephanis, a marine biologist at the Donana Biological Station, which is run by the Spanish National Research Council.

Chile says 20 beached whales die in Strait of Magellan

Twenty killer whales died and 25 others were rescued after becoming stranded along the Strait of Magellan by an unusually low tide, Chile's National Fishing Service said Tuesday. Fishermen and Chilean navy personnel struggled to save the orcas after they ran into trouble near Susan, a village on the strait that links the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans at the southern tip of South America, officials said.

Japan will not stop whaling: minister

Japan's fisheries minister said Tuesday the country will not stop hunting whales, despite fierce criticism from other countries and violent clashes at sea with militant conservationists. "I don't think there will be any kind of an end for whaling by Japan," Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi told AFP in an interview. Hayashi, who took the ministerial post overseeing the country's whaling programmes in December, said the criticism of the practice is "a cultural attack, a kind of prejudice against Japanese culture".
