Cycling: Schleck hoping Amstel Gold heralds return to form

Former Tour de France winner Andy Schleck will be hoping to use the Ardennes classics this month to complete his return to the top. Schleck will line up Sunday at the Amstel Gold race, the first of three Spring Classics in the hilly Ardennes region that will be followed by the Fleche Wallonne and then Liege-Bastogne-Liege.

Luxembourg rider Andy Schleck is delaying his return to competiton after a respiratory infection, his RadioShack team announced on Friday. Schleck, who was due to ride in the Tour du Haut Var-Matin in the south of France this weekend, will not now take part. "Schleck feels healthy again after his infection of the respiratory tract, which forced him to abandon last weeks's Tour Mediterraneen, but team management, together with the medical staff of the team, decided to not take any risk," the team announced.

Former Tour de France champion Andy Schleck dropped out of the Tour of Mediterranean on Wednesday, without completing the first stage. "He was in difficulty during the descent at the Fourches climb," said a the race commissioner about Schleck, who had started to struggle at the 44km mark of the 146.5km run from Limoux to Gruissan.

Jan 28 (Reuters) - Andy Schleck has shaken off concerns that he could struggle to make a mark at this year's Tour de France after the Radioshack-Leopard rider made a less than convincing start to the new season in Australia last week. The 27-year-old Luxembourger struggled in the Adelaide heat and abruptly returned to his hotel after a mechanical problem in Sunday's final stage ended his Tour Down Under campaign prematurely.
