Hollywood legend Spielberg to head Cannes jury

Steven Spielberg, named head of the Cannes Film Festival jury Wednesday, is a Hollywood legend and one of modern cinema's most influential filmmakers -- even if his awards glory has faded of late. The 66-year-old was named to the prestigious post days after his second disappointing awards season in two years, with his top-tipped drama "Lincoln" going home with only two Oscars out of 12 nominations last weekend. So it will come as a welcome honor to be selected to help choose this year's Palme d'Or at the world's top film festival, to be held on the French Rivieria May 15-26.

Spielberg leaves Oscars empty-handed, again

Hollywood veteran Steven Spielberg left the Oscars empty-handed for the second year running, despite his film having the most nominations for Tinseltown's top awards show. Presidential drama "Lincoln" entered the race with 12 nominations, but Ben Affleck's hostage drama "Argo" won virtually every top award over the last month or two, culminating in Sunday's best picture Oscar.

POLL-Spielberg seen winning director Oscar for "Lincoln"

LOS ANGELES, Jan 30 (Reuters) - American filmmaker Steven Spielberg is clear favorite among the public to win the best director award for his film about President Abraham Lincoln at the Academy Awards this year, a Reuters poll showed on Wednesday. While the race to win best film at the Feb. 24 ceremony was shaken up by "Argo" stealing the thunder of "Lincoln" at two award ceremonies last weekend, the best director statuette was deemed destined for one man.
