Hezbollah: powerful pro-Syria, Iran-backed Lebanon force

The Shiite militant group Hezbollah, apparently the destination for the arms shipment targeted by two Israeli air raids in 48 hours inside Syria, is a staunch ally of Iran, that oversaw its creation in 1982, and the Syrian regime, one of its key military backers. Hezbollah, or Party of God, was founded in 1982 in response to Israel's invasion of Lebanon, and has since gained enormous support among Shiites, thanks in part to its extensive social services network.

Hezbollah denies sending drone over Israel

Powerful Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah said Thursday it did not send a drone over Israel, hours after the Israeli air force said it shot down an unmanned aircraft off the country's northern coast. "Hezbollah denies sending any unmanned drone towards occupied Palestine," the movement's television channel Al-Manar said. kam/ser/srm

Syria's Khatib says Hezbollah must pull fighters out

Syria's leading opposition figure Ahmad Moaz al-Khatib called on Wednesday in a letter addressed to Lebanon's Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah to withdraw his fighters from Syria, and to help ensure the conflict does not spiral into a sectarian war. "Hezbollah's intervention in Syria has complicated matters deeply, and I expected you, given your political and social stature, to play a more positive role" in the conflict raging in Syria, Khatib said in an open letter posted on Facebook.

Hezbollah's Syria role threatens Lebanon 'neutrality'

Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah's decision to fight openly alongside the Syrian regime will increase Lebanon's involvement in Syria's conflict, despite a policy of neutrality, analysts say. But despite inflaming tensions, the country is unlikely to face serious instability as a result, because none of its political forces have an interest in such a scenario for now, they say.

Qusayr battle pits Syria rebels against army, Hezbollah

Fierce clashes pitted Syrian rebels against troops and fighters loyal to the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah in several villages near Qusayr on the border with Lebanon on Tuesday, a watchdog said. Meanwhile, a military source told AFP the army expects to seize the town of Qusayr, a rebel stronghold, "within days." "The army is leading the campaign on the northern and eastern fronts, and Hezbollah is leading the fight on the southern and western fronts," said Syrian Observatory for Human Rights director Rami Abdel Rahman.

Lebanon must stop Hezbollah attacks in Syria

Syria's opposition National Coalition called on Lebanon to control its frontiers, after rebels said they fired across the border in retaliation against the powerful Shiite movement Hezbollah. The umbrella opposition group also called on rebel forces in Syria to "exercise restraint" and to respect Lebanon's sovereignty. "The Syrian Coalition calls on the Lebanese government to exert control over its borders and put an immediate stop to Hezbollah's military operations on Syrian territory," the group said late Monday.

Bulgaria says EU could still act against Hezbollah

By Adrian Croft BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Bulgaria will provide more evidence Hezbollah planned an attack that killed five Israelis, in a move it said on Wednesday should convince European Union countries to put the Islamist group on its terrorist list. Bulgaria accused the Lebanese militant movement on February 5 of carrying out a bomb attack on a bus in the Black Sea city of Burgas that killed the Israelis and their Bulgarian driver last July.

Hezbollah condemns Obama's call for terrorist designation

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanon's Hezbollah condemned on Friday a call by U.S. President Barack Obama for the militant Shi'ite group to be designated a terrorist organisation following a bomb attack on Israeli tourists in Bulgaria last year. The European Union has so far resisted U.S. and Israeli pressure to blacklist Hezbollah, but those demands are likely to increase after a court in Cyprus convicted a Hezbollah member on Thursday of plotting against Israeli interests on the island.

Hezbollah slams Obama call for 'terror' listing

Lebanese militant group Hezbollah on Friday slammed US President Barack Obama's demand that nations list it as a "terrorist organisation," saying he spoke like "an employee of the Zionist entity." "He speaks like an employee of the Zionist entity (Israel) and not the highest-ranking official in the administration of the independent state that is the United States," the group said in a statement issued overnight.
