A survey reveals that taking a road trip can be good for strengthening a couple's relationship. So claim 90 percent of respondents when asked if taking a road trip with their partner had proved beneficial, with 77 percent of couples saying they actively look forward to time spent driving together.

Catholic numbers on rise in Africa and Asia

The number of Catholic priests and believers in the world is on the rise, a Vatican report showed on Monday, with gains in Africa and Asia offsetting a slump in Europe and the Americas. The world's Catholics rose from 1.196 billion to 1.214 billion between 2010 and 2011, an increase of 1.5 percent, according to the Church's annual statistics report. The gain outstripped the increase in the global population, which rose by 1.23 percent over the same period, the report said.

South Korea department, discount store sales both fall in April; first time in three months

SEOUL (Reuters) - Sales at South Korea's top department and discount store chains fell simultaneously for the first time in three months, preliminary data showed on Tuesday, suggesting that private consumption in Asia's fourth-largest economy remains subdued. Sales at department stores run by Hyundai Department Store <069960.KS>, Lotte Shopping <023530.KS> and Shinsegae <004170.KS> last month fell by 1.6 percent from a year earlier, the finance ministry estimated, following with a 7.5 percent rise in March.

US employment compensation up 0.3 per cent in Q1; wages grow faster, but benefits slow

WASHINGTON - Americans' wages increased at a faster rate from January through March than the previous quarter, a trend that helped boost economic growth. But their benefits barely grew. The Labor Department says an index that measures wages and benefits rose 0.3 per cent during the first quarter. Asian markets were mostly higher on Wednesday, with Tokyo supported by the weak yen, while Shanghai slipped following a rare trade deficit for China in March. On Wall Street the Dow index provided support as it climbed to yet another record on hopes for the US economy and optimism about the January-March earnings season that started this week. Statistics Centre - Abu Dhabi (SCAD) issued today its agricultural producer price index (APPI) report for vegetables crops the second half of 2012.According to the report, the general APPI for vegetable crops advanced by 3.3 percent from 103.1 points to 106.5 points between the first and the second half of 2012.

S&P tops former record as US markets gain

The widely-watched S&P 500 pushed past its all-time closing high in early trade Thursday as stocks rose, helped by firmer confidence in the eurozone after banks in Cyprus reopened. More than an hour into trade, the S&P pushed past the all-time closing high of 1,565.15 set on October 9, 2007, and held at just around that level, up 0.2 percent from Wednesday's close. The index, which included representatives from all major industrial sectors, has threatened to break the old record for weeks after the Dow Jones Industrial Average smashed its 2007 record last month.

SEJONG, March 19 (Yonhap) -- Nearly seven out of every 10 South Koreans harbor distrust of their society, with those in their 40s being the most distrustful, a poll by a local private think tank showed Tuesday. The poll by Hyundai Research Institute showed that 68.6 percent of those surveyed responded negatively when asked if they believe that the country's politics, economy and overall society are transparent. The poll was conducted on a total of 1,006 people aged 20 or older.
