Anti-whalers call for cash

Militant anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd urged supporters to dig deep Thursday as it launched its 10th harassment campaign against the Japanese fleet, saying US legal action was hitting fundraising. Sea Shepherd director Bob Brown said the group needed US$4 million to run its annual Southern Ocean pursuit of the Japanese at the end of this year, with lawsuits filed in the United States slowing donations. "Japan is doing everything it can to put the US operation under, effectively, complete diversion by legal action," Brown told reporters.

UN court to hear Australia bid to halt Japan whaling

Australia will fire the opening salvoes in a legal battle before the United Nations' highest court in June to try to stop Japan's whale hunt in Antarctica. "The International Court of Justice... will hold public hearings in the case concerning whaling in the Antarctic, Australia versus Japan, from Wednesday 26 June," the Hague-based ICJ said in a statement Thursday.

Japan whaling haul at 'record low'

The haul from Japan's whaling mission in the Southern Ocean was a "record low" this year, a government minister said on Friday, blaming "unforgivable sabotage" by activists. The hunt netted just 103 Antarctic minke whales, less than half its tally last year, and no fin whales, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said, adding it was the lowest total since "research whaling" began in 1987.

Japan's whale 'research' is flashpoint in global dispute

The Institute of Cetacean Research can be found in a nondescript white-brick office building in Tokyo's port district. Down a hallway and through an unmarked door is a small lobby with a model ship, a poster showing various whale species, and a sign that reads "Keep Out". Japan says the research that goes on behind the locked security door is crucial for studying whale populations, but critics slam the practice as a loophole to get around an international ban on commercial whaling.

Sea Shepherd sues Japanese whaler in Netherlands for 'piracy'

Environmental group Sea Shepherd has filed a suit against the crew of Japanese whaling ship Nisshin Maru alleging piracy and attempted manslaughter after they clashed in the Antarctic Ocean in February, their lawyers said on Thursday. "We hereby lodge a suit for piracy, violence and destruction and attempted manslaughter on February 20 and 25 by Captain Tomoyuki Ogawa and the rest of the crew," lawyers Liesbeth Zegveld and Tomasz Kodrzycki said in court documents obtained by AFP.
