Auto racing: Power opens IndyCar season with St. Pete win

Australian Will Power opened the 2014 IndyCar season with a convincing victory on the streets of St. Petersburg on Sunday, beating Ryan Hunter-Reay by almost two seconds. Penske driver Power, who also won the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in 2010, has now won three straight races bridging the 2013 and 2014 seasons. He notched his 22nd victory in 122 starts -- although his strong finish last season wasn't enough to give him a first series title as the 2013 championship went to New Zealand's Scott Dixon.

Auto Racing: IndyCar in talks for 2015 return to Brazil

IndyCar officials are in talks with Brazilian event organizers about returning the open-wheel racing series to the South American nation next year, a top IndyCar executive said Friday. Mark Miles, the chief executive of IndyCar parent Hulman and Company and a former ATP Tour chief executive, said IndyCar is in talks with organizers in Brazilia on a 2015 race. "Brazil has a real history in IndyCar racing and we would like to re-establish a championship race there as early as 2015," Milea said.

Indy 500 introduces new qualifying format

(Reuters) - This year's Indianapolis 500 will see the introduction of a new qualifying format featuring three rounds over two days, race organizers said on Friday. Under the tweaked format, qualifying for the May 25 race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will held on Saturday May 17 and Sunday May 18. On the first day, all drivers will be given four laps around the famed oval circuit, with the top 33 all qualifying for the 98th edition of the race.

Auto racing: Dixon captures third career IndyCar crown

New Zealand's Scott Dixon finished fifth in the season-ending race at the Auto Club Speedway to claim his third IndyCar Series championship on Saturday. Dixon, who competes for Chip Ganassi racing, ended the season with a 27-point margin over points runner-up Helio Castroneves. The Brazilian finished one spot behind Dixon in sixth in Saturday's event.
